In Bi Partisian Move Bergen County Freeholders approve Resolution in Opposition of Common Core.……
Tue, 17 Sep 2013
by Susan

Tonight the Bergen County Freeholders unanimously and with great enthusiasm passed the Resolution in Opposition of Common Core Standards and Assessments!

I have never seen them act with such determination, vigor and unanimity.  Each one added their reason why it is destroying the education of our students. Freeholdesr Voss and Mitchell sponsored the resolution and it was approved by the body of the whole.  Chairman Ganz wanted each member to have a chance to voice their opinions.

This was Democracy at it’s finest at work! Comments included:
We must teach Students to be critical thinkers; stimulate them and teach them how to think.
Common Core is brainwashing! Stimulate them and find ways of learning.
Worst thing that can happen to kids in the US and NJ
The tests are for funding,  Education today is not what it was.  We must go back to where teachers can teach!
It violates our rights vis a vis Family data.
Teacher evaluations are taking priority now.  Individualize the tests, What is the ruse?
We must do what is best for the students and educators.
Unconstitutionality of Common Core
Dumbing down our children
Cookie cutter approach
We should find the gift in each student
Our children are less and less prepared for college and life
Make education a priority
Support our teachers and out schools
Do it State by State.

The enthusiasm was unbelievable  They were excited by the fact that they were all working together on this.  They believe that they have set an example for others. They agreed that Common Core is not for our children and schools!

This was 100% bi partisan 4 Democrats, 3 Republicans! It was a very exciting meeting and an example of how great things can be accomplished when We The People work together.

BERGEN COUNTY BOARD OF CHOSEN FREEHOLDERS RESOLUTION

IN OPPOSITION OF

COMMON CORE STANDARDS AND ASSESSMENTS

SEPTEMBER 17, 2013

WHEREAS, the Board of Chosen Freeholders believes that the Common Core State Standards initiative is not representative of Bergen County’s residents but rather developed by non-governmental organizations and unelected boards outside of Bergen County.

WHEREAS, the Common Core is financed by private foundation funds and is therefore influenced by private interest and not representative of our voters.

WHEREAS, the Common Core violates privacy laws by requiring storage and sharing of private student and family data without individuals consent.

WHEREAS, the New Jersey Education Association urges the State to “slow down a headlong rush to over-rely on student test scores to evaluate teachers in New Jersey”.

WHEREAS, the Common Core has been repudiated by both Republicans and Democrats and it has been stated that curriculum reform should be done at the state level.

WHEREAS, the Common Core violates Constitutional and Federal Law by granting the United States powers which the Constitution reserves for the States, or to the people.

WHEREAS, the New Jersey General Assembly and New Jersey Senate have introduced legislation to further investigate the principals of The Common Core Initiative, and that The Bergen Board of Chosen Freeholders fully supports the passage of *A4197 and *S2973.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders opposes The Common Core Initiative; asks Congress and the Administration to withdraw support and discontinue funding The Common Core Standards Initiative.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution shall be delivered to Senator Robert Menendez, Senator Jeffrey Chiesa, Governor Chris Christie, Congressman William Pascrell, Congressman Albio Sires, Congressman Scott Garrett, and the entire State Legislative Delegation from Bergen County.

2013 Ridgewood Jazz & Blues Feast
September 18,2013
the Ridgewood Guild

Ridgewood NJ, On Sunday Sept 15 The Ridgewood Guild hosted its inaugural Jazz Feast. This one day event drew a crowd of over 2,000 people to Memorial Park at Van Neste Square right here in Ridgewood.

It was truly a happening in the park! A diverse selection of jazz musicians brought down the house. The show opened with jazz and blues songstress Antoinette Montague. She performed with Dave Chamberlain’s Band of Bones, giving her that big band sound that people just adore. Special guest guitarist King Solomon Hicks was pure joy. Antoinette was followed by front man Rob Paparozzi who’s jazz, rock, and blues harmonica playing was equally appealing. Rob has played with industry luminaries such as B. B. King, Whitney Houston, Carole King, and Cyndi Lauper to name a few. The show ended with a stellar performance by one of the industries most revered drummers, Winard Harper. Harper on drums with his band as back up was magical! A special guest appearance by the legendary Steve Turri made the day even more special.

16 of Ridgewood’s finest restaurants were on hand serving up some of the best food that our village has to offer. A Beer and Wine Garden was on hand with the Garden State’s Ventimiglia Vineyards and Kohler Distributing Co.

The Ridgewood Guild would like to thank The Valley Hospital, Park Avenue Saab, and Applebee’s/Shannon Rose for sponsoring our event.

Christie report card, part 2: Above average in education, after battles, stumbles

For many, views of Gov. Chris Christie’s handling of education were cemented in 2010 — the height of his feud with the New Jersey Education Association, either a badge of honor or sign of disrespect for teachers, depending on one’s point of view.

But for enough people in the middle, the other big education news from three years ago — reductions in the flow of aid from Trenton to local schools — seems to be a more distant memory. The result, says pollster Patrick Murray, is that Christie averages a B- for efforts to improve schools, his third highest among seven grades in the new Monmouth University/Asbury Park Press poll. 23,116,928 to 20,618,000: Households on Food Stamps Now Outnumber All Households in Northeast U.S.

September 17, 2013 – 12:31 PM
By Terence P. Jeffrey

(CNSNews.com) – A record 23,116,928 American households were enrolled in the federal government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)—AKA food stamps—during the month of June, according to data released this month by the Department of Agriculture.

That outnumbers the 20,618,000 households that the Census Bureau estimated were in the entire Northeastern United States as of the second quarter of 2013.

According to the Census Bureau, the Northeast region includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania. Thus, in June, the households receiving food stamps exceeded the total combined households in all of these states.

The 23,116,928 million households on food stamps in June also outnumbered the 15,030,000 home-owning households in the entire Western United States in the second quarter of the year and the 18,018,000 home-owning households in the entire Midwest.

Mass Shootings Fuel Fear, Account for Fraction of Murders
By Annie Linskey – Sep 17, 2013 12:02 AM ET

Mass U.S. shootings such as the bloody rampage at the Washington Navy Yard spur safety concerns and garner intense media attention while statistically accounting for few of the total murders reported nationwide.

In the 30 years through March, 78 public mass shootings occurred in the U.S. — incidents in which four or more people were killed at random by a gunman murdering indiscriminately, according to a report issued that month by the Congressional Research Service. These crimes don’t include gang-related killings or domestic disputes where a person slays relatives or other people linked to the murderer.

The mass slaughters listed in the report caused the deaths of 547 people. Over the same three decades through 2012, that’s less than a tenth of 1 percent of the 559,347 people the Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates were murdered in America.

“It is a very, very small percentage,” said James Alan Fox, who teaches criminology at Boston’s Northeastern University and co-authored a book about mass shootings called “Extreme Killing,” published in 2011.

In the wake of shootings such as the one in Washington that claimed at least 13 lives, including the alleged shooter, “our tendancy is to go overboard and overreach in terms of trying to increase levels of security,” Fox said. “The fear is greater than the risk.”

New, taller power lines revive old safety fears

The sequoia-size utility poles that appeared in two northern Bergen County communities this summer were meant to address modern-day problems: increasingly unpredictable weather and ever-growing power demands.

But the sight of 65-foot-tall pillars along some of the region’s wealthiest suburban streets raised a question first asked more than 30 years ago: Could the higher-voltage power lines strung between the poles increase the risk of cancer for nearby residents?

Power lines were once such a bugaboo that their arrival could cause measurable dips in residential property sales, and communities across the Northeast commissioned independent assessments of the power lines hanging over their schools.

Health fears were raised again in August at public forums in Glen Rock and Ridgewood. This time, those fears were summarily dismissed by utility companies with arguments they had made countless times before. Residents are safe, an electrical engineer said at the Aug. 30 forum in Glen Rock. After decades of research, scientists have found no conclusive links between cancer and power lines. Even epidemiologists who once warned of a danger now say the most definitive statement they can make is that the magnetic fields surrounding power lines are a possible cause of cancer, but that the influence — if any — is minor compared with all the other potential hazards people come across every day.

“To change a town’s master plan for this is ludicrous”

Valleywood_theridgewoodblog.net_1-300x22512

“To change a town’s master plan for this is ludicrous”

When in doubt, use logic. The Master Plan is the Planning boards reason out and to say no. The Master Plan is the logic for the Council and all involved just to say no.

The Master Plan is the reason and logical way out for all involved.

Sorry Valley, the Master Plan should not be changed and you have wasted a lot of peoples time and money for this ridiculous expansion in Ridgewood. I do not know why the better solution of expanding is no being talked more about in Paramus. Valley is not a hard luck case. You do not have to expand here to survive.

I find it amazing that we are even still entertaining this year after year.

The existing Master Plan should be enough to stop this just as it’s done in years past. Add next to a school and in a residential neighborhood…why is this still going on?

BIG NO TO VALLEYWOOD

Stop the Nonsense

This frame grab from video provided by Fox 29 shows a raging fire in Seaside Park, N.J. on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013.

“Total Destruction.” That’s how Fire Chief Brian Gabriel describes the scene along four blocks of the Seaside boardwalk that were ravaged by fire Thursday.

From Lincoln to Farragut Avenues. there is nothing left but burned out buildings, some still smoldering.

At a press conference this morning, the chief would not confirm how many businesses were destroyed in yesterday’s fire, which ravaged parts of Seaside Heights and Seaside Park.

Power has largely been restored, except for the area directly around where the fire raged Thursday, Gabriel said.

No business owners are being allowed to return yet.

‘Revenge porn’ victim tells story, fights for change
hursday – 9/12/2013, 12:15pm  ET

By Neal Augenstein

WASHINGTON – “It was completely devastating when I first found the pictures – I could feel myself go into shock.”

Holly Jacobs had no idea the racy photographs she’d shared with her boyfriend would be used against her in a publicly humiliating way after they broke up.

revenge27n-4-web

Yet, in 2009 a friend called to say Jacobs’ Facebook account had been hacked and a nude photo was online.

And it got worse.

“My photos and a video of me were up on a revenge porn website,” says Jacobs, who legally changed her name in the aftermath.

With her name, phone number and email address posted online, Jacobs was bombarded with unwanted attention.

Her photos and videos were even sent to her boss.

Revenge porn sites make no bones about why they exist.

‘Artificial egg’ made from PLANTS backed by Bill Gates set to revolutionize cooking goes on sale at Whole Foods
By Mark Prigg In San Francisco
PUBLISHED: 11:06 EST, 10 September 2013 | UPDATED: 11:09 EST, 10 September 2013

A radical ‘artificial egg’ backed by Paypal billionaire Peter Thiel and Bill Gates goes on sale in US supermarkets for the first time today.

Made from plants, it can replace eggs in everything from cakes to mayonnaise – without a chicken ever coming close to the production process.

The team today started selling their ‘plant egg’, called Beyond Eggs, in Whole Foods in California – and say it could soon be available in supermarkets worldwide.

‘We want to take animals out of the equation,’ said Josh Tetrick, the firm’s founder. ‘The food industry is begging for innovation, especially where animals are involved – it is a broken industry.’

Tetrick’s idea was to find a mix of easy-to-grow plants that, when mixed together in the right way, replicate the taste, nutritional values and cooking properties of an egg.

This, he believes will allow the firm to produce its substitute for mass market foods – and to allow developing worlds to grow their own versions with added nutrients.

‘Eggs are functionally incredible, they do everything from hold oil and water in mayo to making the muffin rise and holding scrambled eggs together,’ he said ‘I started to think what if we can find plants that can do this. We have about 12 plants pre-selected, including a pea already widely grown in Canada. There’s also a bean in South Asia that is incredible in scrambled eggs.’
