A former Tiffany & Co. executive is suing a fellow New Jersey youth soccer mom for accusing her husband of “bullying,” “fixing tryouts” and “engaging in misconduct relating to sportsmanship” while coaching their 10-year-old children in Ridgewood, N.J., according to a lawsuit obtained by the New York Post.

Siobhan Winograd, who worked for Tiffany’s until her son’s birth in 2004, reportedly filed a lawsuit in New York’s Manhattan Supreme Court, accusing anonymous defendants “Ridgewood Soccer Mom” and “John Doe” of “tarnishing” her family’s reputation and inciting “public contempt” within the small community.

Winograd’s husband, Michael, is a lawyer who has served as both a coach and administrator for their son’s Maroons Soccer Club travel team, accoriding to The Bergen Record. The lawsuit claims harassment from the anonymous woman began in 2011 and reached a boiling in a January 2014 email from “ridgewoodsoccermom@gmail.com” to Michael Winograd’s employer.

“The situation stems from the ego (of Michael Winograd) and his belief that his needs trump the needs of the club,” the email read, according to the reports. The email also reportedly cited accusations of financial improprieties levied against the soccer club by Siobhan Winograd last year.

There’s a big difference between ‘opinion’s’ and ‘slander’.
If someone makes a statement about a particular individual that is false and or defamatory, I’d say they could be liable for it. (one would have to prove damages in court and that’s a difficult and expensive task)
A ‘public person’ *elected official, govt employee* vs a ‘private person’ also has certain definitions and parameters of what is acceptable and expected to be written about them.
If I recall, one of the earlier online blogs set a legal precedent where online posters could state opinions, but not false accusations and slander.
The blog owner was sued and the problem there…and im not 100 percent certain…had to do with his editing of posts or selectively allowing some posts and not others vs. allowing all posts.
It was “emerson eye’ or ‘eye on emerson’… something along that name.

Ridgewood youth soccer coach’s wife sues critics, citing complaints about tryouts

RIDGEWOOD — The village once again finds itself at the center of a drama involving a youth soccer program and the behavior of the adults in charge. This time, however, it’s playing out in a courtroom.

In a lawsuit filed in a Manhattan court last week, Siobhan Winograd, the wife of a leader of a village-based soccer travel team, alleges that her husband is the victim of false complaints lodged by anonymous critics.

Winograd would not discuss the suit with The Record on Saturday. But according to a copy of the filing, anonymous complaints sent to the village soccer organization had falsely alleged that Michael Winograd had “fixed” tryouts for the team and “engaged in misconduct relating to sportsmanship during the season.”

In the suit, which identifies the defendants as “Ridgewood Soccer Mom” and “John Doe,” Siobhan Winograd alleges that the complaints made anonymously to the village soccer organization were designed to injure “her family’s reputation and standing with their small community.”

This is not the first time that youth soccer in Ridgewood has come under unwelcome scrutiny.

Village resident and independent film director Caytha Jentis released a film in 2012 called “Bad Parents,” which was based on a play — “It’s All About the Kids” — that she had written about her soccer-mom experiences in Ridgewood.

The film, a satire starring Janeane Garofalo and Christopher Titus, painted an unflattering portrait of the parental back story that at times pervades youth sports programs in suburbia.

In the lawsuit, Winograd argues that, since the summer of 2011, she and her family “have been subjected to a pattern of harassment and other tortious conduct.”

A New Jersey soccer mom is defending her husband’s honor by filing a lawsuit against an unknown woman who badmouthed her youth-coach hubby for “fixing tryouts” and “engaging in misconduct relating to sportsmanship during the season,” a new lawsuit says.

Former Tiffany’s Co. executive-turned-stay-at-home mom Siobhan Winograd charged the unnamed busybody – named in the suit only as “Ridgewood Soccer Mom” – with “tarnishing” her picture-perfect family’s reputation “within their small community” and stirring “up public contempt for [her] and her family.”

Attorney Michael Winograd and his wife started volunteering for their 10-year-old son’s traveling soccer team in 2011 and have been subject to a pattern of anonymous harassment ever since, the Manhattan Supreme Court suit says.

“Defendants filed anonymous written complaints with the village travel soccer organization claiming that [Winograd’s] husband had fixed the tryouts for the team,” the suit states.
