RIDGEWOOD — It certainly had been an up-and-down season for the Ridgewood High School boys lacrosse team to date.

Goalie Jack Cardew (25) and defenseman Thomas Tarleton (3) protect the Ridgewood net from Somerville attacker Bryan Rogers last Saturday at RHS Stadium. The Maroons capped their Lax Day contest with a 10-1 win.

Chalk it up to an extremely tough schedule and the fact that the Maroons, who began the season 3-0, are a relatively young team in search of an identity.

After the hot start, Ridgewood went through a 3-4 stretch capped by a tough, 7-5 loss at New Canaan (Conn.) leading up to last Saturday’s Lax Day showdown with undefeated Somerville (8-0) at RHS Stadium.

“Obviously, we’ve had a bit of a tough start to our season,” senior attacker Matt Shippee said. “It’s been very frustrating for us, because we know we can play better [than we have].”

The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Jared DeLouisa. But the Maroons went on the offensive and scored 10 unanswered goals in a dominant, 10-1 win.

A New Jersey soccer mom is defending her husband’s honor by filing a lawsuit against an unknown woman who badmouthed her youth-coach hubby for “fixing tryouts” and “engaging in misconduct relating to sportsmanship during the season,” a new lawsuit says.

Former Tiffany’s Co. executive-turned-stay-at-home mom Siobhan Winograd charged the unnamed busybody – named in the suit only as “Ridgewood Soccer Mom” – with “tarnishing” her picture-perfect family’s reputation “within their small community” and stirring “up public contempt for [her] and her family.”

Attorney Michael Winograd and his wife started volunteering for their 10-year-old son’s traveling soccer team in 2011 and have been subject to a pattern of anonymous harassment ever since, the Manhattan Supreme Court suit says.

“Defendants filed anonymous written complaints with the village travel soccer organization claiming that [Winograd’s] husband had fixed the tryouts for the team,” the suit states.

RIDGEWOOD — How strong is this village’s love for lacrosse? Even the fiercest of college rivalries takes a back seat when Ridgewood High School players choose their next stop after graduation.

Katie Smesko was one of four senior members of the Maroon girls lacrosse team who formally announced plans to play at a Division I school during RHS Fall Letter of Intent Media Day on Nov. 21. She and teammate Devon Maltz both committed to the University of Michigan, though in only one of their households did the decision cause a stir.

“My dad grew up in Ohio, so his whole side of the family are really big Ohio State fans,” said Smesko, adorned in a blue and maize Michigan sweatshirt at the time. “So, when I went to visit Michigan, it was a little tough for him. But he’s so happy, and he knows it’s such a great school, so I’m really excited about it.”

Kelly McBrearty is headed to Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. to join former teammate Lauren Beausoleil (RHS Class of 2013) – and play 15 miles down the road from Maroon alum Maggie Carver (Class of 2013), now at rival Lafayette College.

Darby Kiernan will play for the University of Colorado. The Buffaloes are a Pacific-12 Conference foe of Southern California, where 2012 RHS grad Courtney Tarleton plays.

Ridgewood High School historically has fielded good girls cross-country teams. The 2013 RHS squad is shaping up to be historically good.

The Maroons rolled to their 28th group title at last Saturday’s Bergen County championship meet in Mahwah and will return to Darlington Park tomorrow in search of their 27th Bergen Meet of Champions (BMOC) crown.
