Ridgewood iMac computer was hacked in Scam

the staff of the Ridgwood blog

Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Police report that a William Street resident reported being the victim of a theft by deception and fraud. The victim reported he was contacted by a party reporting to be from Apple’s fraud department and that his iMac computer was hacked. The victim provided access to his personal computer and was advised to purchase $400 in Apple gift cards. The victim purchased the gift cards and provided the serial numbers to the caller and then realized it was a scam and contacted the police department.

How to Avoid phishing emails, fake ‘virus‘ alerts, phony support calls, and other scams

Use these tips to avoid scams and learn what to do if you think your Apple ID has been compromised.

If you see a message while browsing the web that your iPhone, Mac, or other Apple device has a virus, or someone claiming to be from Apple calls and asks for your account name and password, you’re likely the target of a scam.

Scammers use any means they can—fake emails, pop-up ads, text messages, even phone calls—to try to trick you into sharing personal information, such as your Apple ID password or credit card information. Use this information to protect your account and avoid scams.

Protect your Apple ID

Never share your Apple ID password or temporary verification codes with anyone. Apple will never ask you for this information to provide support.

Use two-factor authentication to protect your Apple ID. Learn more about security and your Apple ID.

If you believe that your Apple ID has been compromised, change your password immediately.

If you see pop-up alerts or ads

When you browse the web, you might see a pop-up ad or a page warning you about a problem with your device. It might even look like the alert is coming from macOS or iOS. It isn’t. These alerts are pop-up ads, designed to trick you into calling a phony support number or buying an app that claims to fix the issue. Don’t call the number. Simply close the pop-up ad, or navigate away from that page and continue browsing.

If you get a suspicious phone call or voicemail

Scammers spoof phone numbers and use flattery and threats to pressure you into giving them information, money, and even iTunes gift cards. Always verify the caller’s identify before you provide any personal information. If you get an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Apple, hang up and contact us directly.

If you receive a phishing email or text message

Scammers try to copy email and text messages from legitimate companies to trick you into entering personal information and passwords. Never follow links or open attachments in suspicious or unsolicited messages. If you need to change or update personal information, contact the company directly.

These signs can help you identify phishing scams:

The sender’s email address or phone number doesn’t match the name of the company that it claims to be from.
Your email address or phone number is different from the one that you gave that company.
The message starts with a generic greeting, like “Dear customer.” Most legitimate companies will include your name in their messages to you.
A link appears to be legitimate but takes you to a website whose URL doesn’t match the address of the company’s website.*
The message looks significantly different from other messages that you’ve received from the company.
The message requests personal information, like a credit card number or account password.
The message is unsolicited and contains an attachment.

Report phishing attempts and other suspicious messages to Apple

To report a suspicious email, forward the message to Apple with complete header information. To forward the email: In macOS Mail, select the email and choose Forward As Attachment from the Message menu at the top of your computer screen.

These email addresses are monitored by Apple, but you might not receive a reply to your report.

If you receive what you believe to be a phishing email that’s designed to look like it’s from Apple, please send it to [email protected].
To report spam or other suspicious emails that you receive in your iCloud.com, me.com, or mac.com Inbox, please send them to [email protected].
To report spam or other suspicious messages that you receive through iMessage, tap Report Junk under the message, or take a screenshot on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac and send it to [email protected].
If you receive a suspicious message about your purchase activity in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store, contact iTunes Support.

*To confirm the destination of a link on your Mac, hover your pointer over the link to see the URL in the status bar. If you can’t see the status bar in Safari, choose View>Show Status Bar. On your iOS device, touch and hold the link.

New Jersey Transit Announces New Safety Upgrades

Hoboken Train Station Crash

September 22,2017
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, NJ TRANSIT has implemented a variety of rail safety upgrades over the past year and is looking at additional enhancements for the future, as part of its commitment to safety.

Rail Operations is currently in the process of replacing all stub end tracks at Hoboken Terminal with new sliding friction bumper blocks as well as advancing a speed control system for trains entering Hoboken Terminal.  Other initiatives this past year include enhanced sleep apnea screening and testing, adding additional personnel to the front of trains entering certain stations and reducing speed limits.

“As we approach the one-year anniversary of the tragic incident at Hoboken Terminal, and while the cause has not been identified, NJ TRANSIT continues taking immediate actions to better protect our customers, our employees and the public,” said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Steve Santoro.  “The steps we’ve taken so far are moving us in the right direction and we continually raise the bar higher each and every day.  Safety is a demand that I will not compromise or negotiate on.”

NJ TRANSIT hired an outside contractor to conduct a detailed inspection of all of the bumper blocks in Hoboken Terminal, and to provide a recommendation for the type of bumper block to replace the damage block on Track 5.

As a result, a decision was made to replace all of the bumper blocks with sliding friction bumper blocks at Hoboken Terminal, the Atlantic City Rail Terminal and the Meadowlands Rail Station – all stub end stations.

In addition, NJ TRANSIT is also advancing the speed control system for trains approaching the end of the platform at Hoboken Terminal.

Over the course of the past year, NJ TRANSIT has implemented the following safety initiatives.

In October 2016, NJ TRANSIT implemented an interim measure where any safety sensitive rail employee who exhibits any indication of potential fatigue symptoms is immediately removed from service until they obtain the appropriate documentation attesting to the satisfactory results or the condition is not present.  This initiative was formalized as policy in April 2017.
To date, 350 of 370 engineers and nearly a third of more than a thousand conductors have been screened for sleep apnea. By the end of September, all locomotive engineers will be screened for sleep apnea.
NJ TRANSIT has advanced the installation of forward and inward facing cameras on trains.  To date, nearly 84% of trains now have forward facing cameras and more than 73% of the rail fleet has inward facing cameras, which are focused on the engineer’s actions.  NJ TRANSIT expects to have both cameras in the entire fleet by year’s end.
Rail Operations implemented a new initiative which requires the conductor to ride in the front cab of trains, along with the engineer, when entering terminals in Hoboken, Penn Station New York, Atlantic City, Princeton, Gladstone and the Meadowlands station.
Speed limits entering Hoboken, Atlantic City, Princeton and the Meadowlands Rail Station have been reduced from 10 mph to 5 mph as a proactive measure.
Rail Operations has increased the penalty for cell phone infractions, now up to a 90 day suspension for a first time violation.
The Office of System Safety (OSS) continues to hire and backfill key safety positions including a Deputy Chief Safety Officer, Industrial Hygienist, Environmental Safety Specialist and Safety Education Program Specialist.
OSS conducted 16 safety blitzes at key grade crossings and stations to educate and reinforce rail safety to customers and the public.
This past year, the New Jersey Transit Police Department worked with a number of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and emergency responders, providing emergency response training for 750 first responders, and rail safety training for an additional 550 first responders.

Farm-to-Table Restaurant B.GOOD Introduces “Food with Roots”

B

September 21,2017
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ,  B.GOOD, an international and mission-driven fast casual restaurant chain, unveils its new “Food with Roots” brand campaign today across its North American locations to spark conversation with its customers about the importance of clean food and social impact. Beginning today, Food with Roots will roll out in key markets through targeted digital advertising, point of sale branding, refreshed designs across stores and packaging and a public awareness campaign. Please click here to watch a short story about B.Good “Food with Roots”.

Founded in 2003, B.GOOD has an established mission to spread the transformative power of good food to create positive social impact in communities around the world.  “Food with Roots” captures a realized company vision that feeds a virtuous cycle of a new food system that includes sourcing, serving and consuming good, clean, nutritious and delicious food.  Further, “Food with Roots” illustrates how B.GOOD connects with the communities in which it operates.

“When we opened our first restaurant, we didn’t consider – or even imagine – ourselves as ‘pioneers’ in the fast food service industry,” reflects Anthony Ackil, Co-Founder and CEO of B.GOOD. “At that time, we followed inspiration from our families and simply wanted to cook and serve good, clean and fresh food – just as my Uncle Faris did for me when I was growing up. However, as we evolved, we discovered ways to create positive impact in our customers’ communities and we developed a significantly unique and deeper meaning than the farm-to-table trend portrayed in today’s QSR and fast casual dining industry. ‘Food with Roots’ celebrates everyone who contributes to having sustainable, local, fresh, clean food find its way onto our customers’ tables.”

Food with Roots begins with farmers who sustainably grow natural ingredients from farms located around B.GOOD restaurants. The effort continues with B.GOOD team members who carefully prepare and serve it fresh each day. Food with Roots also includes customers who enjoy this delicious, heritage-rich food that’s inspired by family members and now shared with new families and friends. Finally, to complete the cycle, B.GOOD returns ongoing support back to the local farms, organizations and individuals who nurture their communities.

As part of the introduction of B.GOOD’s new positioning, the restaurant chain will feature several food promotions in its stores for familiar menu items such as burgers, salads, bowls, shakes and smoothies. And, true to its seasonal cooking roots, B.GOOD is introducing multiple tasty dishes this fall including Avocado Toast and vegetarian Zucchini Spaghetti and Eggplant Meatballs. In upcoming weeks, additional community activities will be announced as part of local store and franchise marketing efforts.

About B.GOOD

Founded in 2003, B.GOOD is an innovative, fast casual, farm-to-table restaurant chain serving “Food with Roots” – sustainably-grown, fresh and wholesome food that is prepared by hand in-house. With 60 locations across the U.S., Canada, Switzerland and Germany, B.GOOD serves a diverse and delicious menu including kale & grain bowls, salads, all-natural local burgers, sides of crisp veggies and oven-finished fries, smoothies and kids’ meals.  By sourcing as much as possible from local, independent farmers and being genuinely committed to social and environmental impact, B.GOOD has a unique connection to the communities the brand calls home.  Visit bgood.com for more information.  B.GOOD has a restaurant at 381 Route 17 South in Ridgewood.

Confusion Over Debit Cards in the Village of Ridgewood

Village Council -Halaby

September 21,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, we have noticed and increase in the velocity of dissent to the lowest common denominator in the Village lately . Is it really the case in the Village that grown adults do not know how a simple debit card works? (REALLY) And these people can afford to pay taxes and live in Ridgewood ? (REALLY) . And some think the new Estate Card will eliminate or should eliminate  all your property taxes? (REALLY).

We know a group of Paul Aronsohn crusaders , who are  simply in love all things Paul Aronsohn and are still alive and active in the village , and we know this self interested group of people are trying to undermine the current mayor , but folks the disrespect and stupidity is getting a bit out of hand .

Its no wonder scammers continue to target Ridgewood  as a place of easy pickings for the latest con job .

The following is a letter we pulled off of Facebook :

An open letter to Matt Rogers and Bob Rooney, respectively General Counsel and CFO of the Village of Ridgewood, concerning the Ridgewood Estate Card:

Dear Mr. Rogers and Mr. Rooney:

I am very concerned about the letter sent out by Mayor Knudsen endorsing the Ridgewood Estate Card. Has the letter been vetted by someone with a financial understanding of the working of credit/debit cards?
The letter is so cheerful, chirpy and positive, it makes it sound like “money for old rope.” Admittedly, the Mayor asks the recipients to read the “Cardholder Agreement and Membership Agreement’” a nice disclaimer, but how understandable are these agreements to the layman? I have three degrees from two top U.S. universities, and I can hardly go past the third line of such agreements. I looked up the website and the fees presented are beyond comprehension or comparison.
Reading comments on FB and trying my best to understand the economics, it appears one has to deposit $800 monthly to start earning the 0.25% offset to real estate taxes. At spending of $10,000 per year, this means a contribution of $25. Is that really worth it? There might be additional savings on purchases but based on what? And what charges are incurred if the card owner does not use $800 in purchases?
For the record, I am not an expert in this field, but I can’t but believe the card is not as good as it appears. If I am wrong, please correct me.
Again, has this been vetted by our CFO or the FAC? Wouldn’t that be something they should have looked at?
I honestly worry that the Village is exposing itself to trouble as I think the letter is not complete in all the information it should provide. Some people will feel misled.
Thank you,
Rurik Halaby

Could someone please inform Mr Halaby that the FAC has been shut down and that the FAC failed to follow even the most traditional and mundane generally accepted financial practice standards ,leaving the Village open to massive liability law suits .The  FAC over time proved to be nothing more than a bunch of political hacks looking to promote the failed agenda of former mayor Paul Aronsohn.

While Mr. Halably claims to have,” three degrees from two top U.S. universities ” I guess none of the degrees involved book keeping , and basic math .By the way in 3rd Grade we all learn (in America) that you should read things before you sign it . If there is something you don’t understand you can “Google” it or even call the toll free number and ask. I know its simply brilliant.

Look we know Mr. Halaby is smarter than this . Our suggestion would be to focus on issues , like Ridgewood Water or the over development of CBD and the lack of infrastructure to support it or even the crazy high taxes , oh but wait those issues are what pushed Aronsohn and his wanabe fan club out of political power to begin .

Sealfon’s Project ;”minimal impact on downtown traffic” ?

Sealfons-rendering

September 21,2017

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ, at this point you can only laugh . Once again another ” independent traffic consultant” told the planning board on Tuesday night that a two-building mixed-use redevelopment project in the old Sealfon’s space would have minimal impact on downtown traffic , this time wait for it , “due to a massive reduction in the properties’ existing commercial space”. Where do they find these people? The “retail” is a teller less bank and  one retail store ?

The planning board showed great restraint not busting into laughter.  By the way where is the water going to come from?

The Enclave as it is called would encompass several properties, including that of the Hallmark Floor Company and Sealfon’s  on Maple Avenue, and would contain 39 luxury-rate apartments on four floors above one story of underground parking lot that will serve the building’s commercial units with 84 spaces. A second story of parking at street level would be reserved for tenants of The Enclave but would only contain 47 spaces 10 spaces short of what zoning codes require.

The Enclave would be the  fourth “Aronsohn” or  “3 amigo”  inspired project that followed a master plan amendment to rezone downtown Ridgewood for multifamily high density housing.

As a kicker 257 Ridgewood Avenue LLC would even be willing to add a $50,000 contribution to a fair share trust fund, which would partially fund a replacement traffic light for Maple and Franklin avenues. The would mean Village tax payers would be stuck with anywhere from $200-400,000 of the cost . Maybe the previous council majority should be asked to fund the upgrades or the developer should share ownership with the Ridgewood taxpayer ?

Reader says “Bee City” more restrictions on what you can and cannot do on public and private property

Ridgewood swarm of bees

Translation … more restrictions on what you can and cannot do on public and private property.
Another means of control and reduction in your individual rights…
.
“Sustaining bees means ensuring access to “tons and tons and tons of habitat that is rich in native flowers and free of pesticides,” she says. In identifying the best cities for bees, we looked for communities with defined resolutions and commitments to protecting and/or creating sustainable habitats for pollinators. “
.
“The Bee City USA program endorses a set of commitments, defined in a resolution, for creating sustainable habitats for pollinators, which are vital to feeding the planet.”
.
Some QUESTIONS:
.
1) How much of the Budget is now going to be diverted to support the “Bee City” commitments?
.
2) How much land (REQUIRED pollinator habitats) will be designated for bees and therefore unable to be used for other purposes?
.
3) WHO is our “BEE CITY USA” liaison?
.
4) Who will pay for the (REQUIRED) “National Pollinator Week” celebration?
.
5) What is our official “Comprehensive Bee Plan” ?
.
.
Another national/global liberal agenda item adopted by Ridgewood designed to divert time and money and restrict land usage and personal property rights.
.
WAKE UP PEOPLE….

Reader says Habernickel Park in Ridgewood is a Mess

Habernickel Park Gate House

It is an endevour gone sour. I agree with the above comment. Get out of the real estate business you are doing a poor job of it at the gate house. None of the activities bringing in major revenue for a private business are monitored by the village. When questions are asked to the village in regards to these activities they do NOT know the answers!!! It was never fair what was done to this neighborhood. No other active field or park also has a very active business in it! out of respect for all tax payers it should be at the absolute least monitored and controlled by the village. I was there yesterday with my small children after school and the amount of cars in the parking lot and in the street was ridiculous. All the fields were being used and the drivers had no respect for myself and my kids in bikes. I saw illegal parking, u turns on the street backing up from soccer moms just to get out of the driveway all the while more and more cars coming for classes or whatever at the gatehouse. Insane, unsafe and sad!!! It was a beautiful peaceful place to bring your kids but no longer. Lights or no lights it is a mess!!!!

Today’s US teens about three years behind ’70s generation when it comes to sex, alcohol and getting jobs

Published: 06:26 EDT, 19 September 2017 | Updated: 07:44 EDT, 19 September 2017

Teenagers in America today are about three years behind their counterparts from the 1970s when it comes to taking up sex, drinking alcohol, and working for pay, researchers said Tuesday.

The findings in the journal Child Development were based on an analysis of seven large, nationally representative surveys of 8.3 million teenagers between 1976 and 2016.

The surveys sought to find out how those aged 13 to 19 spent their time, and how often they engaged in adult activities such as drinking alcohol, dating, taking jobs, driving, or having sex, said the report.
