THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
Shoppers and diners will now have an extra hour of parking in Ridgewood.
The Village Council voted on Wednesday to convert all of Ridgewood’s two-hour meters to three-hour meters.
Business leaders have advocated for the change, noting that the switch will give customers more time to leisurely shop and dine without worrying about a parking ticket.
Some concerns about the three-hour limit were previously raised by Councilwoman Susan Knudsen, who argued that four hours was more leisurely. The council ultimately settled on three hours, citing varied reasoning, including the fear that four-hour meters would entice part-time workers to use those spots rather than shoppers.
“It’s never going to be perfect,” Mayor Paul Aronsohn said, noting that the meter time could be changed again. “We’ll have to monitor the situation.”
This plan to convert two-hour meters to three-hour meters comes in tandem with a larger discussion about short-term parking solutions. These solutions being discussed would serve as a temporary balm to Ridgewood’s parking woes while the village explores its long-term options, including a proposed county-funded garage (see story on page A1).

What constitutes “repeat parking” and why is it banned?
What constitutes “repeat parking” and why is it banned?
October 24,2014
Boyd A. Loving
9:31 PM (6 hours ago)
“Repeat parking” is the act of feeding a parking meter beyond the maximum permissible time posted for parking at a specific location. Example: if the posted time limit for parking at meters on East Ridgewood Avenue is 3 hours between 9AM and 5PM, it is unlawful to leave your vehicle in place at any meter there for longer than 3 hours during the noted time period, even if you’ve put additional money in the meter.
Why is “repeat parking” banned? “Repeat parking” is banned to facilitate turnover in parking spaces. Retail merchants in particular believe that people are more likely to patronize stores when parking spaces are readily available nearby. If there were little to no turnover in parking places, merchants believe patrons would become frustrated and spend their money in communities other than Ridgewood.
This is how “repeat parking” is described on the Village’s official PARKING GUIDE:
REPEAT PARKING/FEEDING METER
Is not permitted. Once the maximum time on the
meter is passed, the vehicle must be moved not
only out of that spot, but out of that lot or to a
new street.
https://mods.ridgewoodnj.net/pdf/manager/20131127PM.pdf
YOUR OPINION WANTED: Does it make sense to permit the movement of a vehicle to another lot, or to another street, once it has been parked for the maximum permissible time, or does this defeat the main objective of creating turnover so that parking spots are readily available? Please weigh in below.

The menu: mostly pizza. The setting: tiny. The phone: often ignored. The wait for a table: sometimes an hour.
And no wonder: Ridgewood newcomer S. Egidio is a local novelty, an Italian restaurant run by a newly arrived Italian chef with food that is both authentic and creative.
Its menu is simple: Italian cured meat, imported cheeses, salads, a few appetizers, and Neapolitan pizzas that are blasted for a minute in a 1,000-degree oven until blistered and bubbling. Occasionally, there are pasta specials; sandwiches are served at lunch.

Barbara and Gary Kolesaire, owners of The Tobacco Shop, held a grand opening of their brand new Davidoff Smoking Lounge last week.
It was an elegant affair, featuring a red carpet for those entering the Chestnut Street establishment. On the ground floor, people were sharing wine and conversation, nibbling from an array of hors d’oeuvres; others settled in on balcony chairs, cigars in hand.
The Kolesaire’s sons were greeting arrivals.
Scott Kolesaire, 29, spent three years in the family business and is now with Davidoff’s AVO division in Florida. AVO, he tells listeners, “is named after the man, a jazz musician, who wrote ‘Strangers in the Night’ for Frank Sinatra.”
Tim, 26, is in finance, but assures listeners he remains a cigar enthusiast.
“Because I smoked a pipe,” Gary says, recalling how he got into the business. “I graduated from college and started to go to the Wooden Indian on Ridgewood Avenue. I’m a people person. It was something I loved.”
He beams and says, “Here we are, 35 years and still expanding.”

RIDGEWOOD — Village officials unveiled several parking proposals they hope will attract visitors to the downtown business district and also ease parking for residents.
One proposal offered at Wednesday’s council meeting would standardize parking hours, fees and durations throughout the village.
“All downtown meters would run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” according to the proposal, altering the current 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. range.
Also, all downtown meters would offer three- or four-hour parking, as opposed to the current limit of two hours.
“All downtown meters will cost 25 cents per half-hour,” the proposal states, adding existing 15-minute parking spaces would remain.
“This will make parking easier and simpler for shoppers and diners, enhancing the overall downtown experience,” according to the plan.
Another proposal seeks to restrict long-term parking passes — currently sold to residents and non-residents on an annual basis — to Ridgewood residents only. At present, about 120 out-of-town commuters pay the same amount as residents for long-term parking passes, Village Manager Roberta Sonenfeld said. An alternative proposal would have non-residents pay twice as much for the long-term pass.
“There is a parking scarcity in this town,” Mayor Paul Aronsohn said at the council’s meeting Wednesday, adding it has taken out-of-the-box thinking to determine ways of improving it.
The issue of parking in Ridgewood has been front and center in recent weeks at public forums organized by Deputy Mayor Al Pucciarelli. At these gatherings, residents and business owners have keyed in on parking as the village’s biggest hindrance.

WHAT: Musician Billy Idol signing his memoir, “Dancing With Myself” ($28, Touchstone Publishing)
WHEN: 7 p.m. Monday
WHERE: Bookends, 211 E. Ridgewood Ave., Ridgewood.
INFO: book-ends.com
A surprising dichotomy emerges in “Dancing With Myself,” the new memoir by ’80s punk rocker Billy Idol. There’s the well-spoken guy who’s had his nose buried in books from the time he was a suburban middle class Brit kid in his high school uniform. And there’s the crack-smoking sex maniac who nearly died several times on drugs or on a motorcycle.
Working on the book – without the aid of a ghost writer — forced him to take a good long look at his undeniable tendency of going to extremes. “I am my own nemesis,” Idol said in a husky voice during a telephone interview last week from Los Angeles, where he lives. “You try to come to grips with your past, and face up to yourself, for all of the good and the evil. There are sort of two disparate elements in my character that help me to achieve my art. There is a difference between William Broad [his birth name] and Billy Idol.”
The writing style in his memoir reflects Idol’s literate side. “I have always loved books. I gravitated to books from the time I was very young, gobbling them up. Especially histories, or biographies. There was always a dream of mine to write a book. So when this chance came along, I thought to myself, I’m in this place in my life right now where I can look back a long way, and hopefully, still look forward, too,” said Idol, who will be at Bookends in Ridgewood Monday. “Some of the memories were just beginning to become corroded, and so I thought, god, if I don’t do it now, I’ll never be able to do it.”
Friendly, witty and articulate, Idol, 58, is not exactly what you would at first expect. At least, not compared to the sneering, demented-eyed, spiked blond, black leather bondage guy known for pumping a fist into the air and crying, “More! More! More!” with a “Rebel Yell.” That was one of his many hits from the mid 1980s. Others included “Eyes Without A Face,” “Dancing With Myself,” “Mony Mony,” and “White Wedding.”

Davidoff Announces Opening of Cigar Lounge in Ridgewood, NJ
Premier Swiss cigar brand opens its newest lounge in the United States
Basel, September 29, 2014 – Davidoff, a Swiss company known for its excellence in luxury goods, announces the opening of its Davidoff Lounge at The Tobacco Shop of Ridgewood in downtown Ridgewood, NJ. Being the 4th addition to the Davidoff lounge portfolio in the US, Ridgewood marks the roll-out of additional locations under the global lounge concept.
The Davidoff Lounge at The Tobacco Shop of Ridgewood offers an oasis of sophistication and comfort. The 2,400 square foot space takes the concept of traditional lounges to the next level featuring a modern design with industrial inspired touches and natural materials.
Situated in a 1931 historical building, the lounge features exposed brick walls, striking antique skylights and 21 industrial windows welcoming natural light. A statement-making peninsula fireplace sits in the center of the lounge, custom designed to add warmth and interest to the open floor plan. With custom furniture and décor, the overall design creates a balance between the modern but traditional allure of Ridgewood. Amenities include an elegant boardroom offering members a private space to conduct meetings and hold private dinner events. 100 custom-built humidified lockers welcome private members to store their personal cigars.
Davidoff commissioned NYC urban artists UR New York to create a 3-dimensional metal wall sculpture depicting the fusion of Davidoff luxury and Ridgewood’s downtown urban flavor. URNY artists Fernando “Ski” Romero and Mike “2ESAE” Baca drew inspiration from the historical and present elements of Ridgewood, constructing a 3D assemblage of recycled and found materials from their time in Ridgewood.
The Tobacco Shop of Ridgewood
The Tobacco Shop of Ridgewood has just completed its fourth and largest expansion in its 35-year history. The shop is nestled in the historic area of the Village of Ridgewood, a Victorian town established in 1894. A family business, developed in 1979, has brought much camaraderie between many of the men and women that have patronized the shop over the years. This expansion into the Davidoff Lounge will expand the networking of many of the members in a 2,400 square foot upscale setting.
A Century of Davidoff
Henri Davidoff, who emigrated from Kiev to Switzerland at a time of political unrest, opened his first store in Geneva in 1911, laying the foundations for today’s worldwide network of 65 Davidoff Flagship Stores. Henri’s son, Zino Davidoff, learned the trade from the ground up. He resided for several years in Central and South America to deepen his knowledge. In 1930, he returned to Switzerland and thereafter successfully managed the business over four decades. Zino Davidoff transferred the family business to the Oettinger Group in 1970.
Davidoff appeals to connoisseurs all over the world who seek to embrace the art of living and pleasure. The premium brand Davidoff stands for a culture of conscious enjoyment and reflection in today’s hectic world. Davidoff learned over the years that time is the ultimate luxury. Zino’s pleasure in this was the starting point for the global brand of Davidoff, a brand that connects people all around the world. A brand that fills the unforgettable moments in life with the joy and pleasure of elegance and beauty – “Time Beautifully Filled.”
Oettinger Davidoff Group – a Swiss family business steeped in tradition
With almost 4,000 employees around the world, the CHF 1.3 billion Oettinger Davidoff Group traces its roots back to 1875 and remains family owned to this day. The Group operates two distinctly different businesses: one focused on consumer goods distribution in the Swiss market, and one dedicated to its core business, the producing, marketing, and retailing of premium branded cigars, tobacco products, and accessories. The premium-branded cigar business includes Davidoff, Camacho, Zino Platinum, AVO, Cusano, Griffin’s, Private Stock, Zino, and Winston Churchill Cigars. Oettinger Davidoff Group is anchored in a strong “crop-to-shop” philosophy, having pursued a vertical integration from its tobacco fields in the Dominican Republic and Honduras to its worldwide network of 65 Davidoff Flagship Stores.

Top 10 Reasons to Support Locally Owned Businesses
The content that follows was originally published on the Institute for Local Self-Reliance website at https://www.ilsr.org/why-support-locally-owned-businesses/
1. Local Character and Prosperity
In an increasingly homogenized world, communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character have an economic advantage.
2. Community Well-Being
Locally owned businesses build strong communities by sustaining vibrant town centers, linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships, and contributing to local causes.
3. Local Decision-Making
Local ownership ensures that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions.
4. Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy
Compared to chain stores, locally owned businesses recycle a much larger share of their revenue back into the local economy, enriching the whole community.
5. Job and Wages
Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do.
6. Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means for families to move out of low-wage jobs and into the middle class.
7. Public Benefits and Costs
Local stores in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services relative to big box stores and strip shopping malls.
8. Environmental Sustainability
Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centers-which in turn are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.
9. Competition
A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term.
10. Product Diversity
A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based, not on a national sales plan, but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices
