No Ridgewood restaurant screams luxury like the six-month-old Roots Steakhouse.
First, a valet parked my car, a relief on a busy Saturday night. A hostess escorted me into the clubby dining room, which featured dark wood paneling, a stunning engraved ceiling and charming prints of vintage fashions. All around me, well-dressed customers dined on gleaming seafood platters, brawny steaks and towering desserts.
And once my meal began, it was clear that Roots has much to offer, including some excellent red meat and a first-class crabcake. But while Roots has some steaks that are prime and some steaks that are dry-aged, it offers none that are both, which may turn off many steak purists.

Small Business Saturday is a national day to encourage people to shop at small businesses.
Saturday, November 29, 2014 is Small Business Saturday® – a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do in your community.
Please join the Ridgewood blog and organizations across the country in supporting your local small business by shopping at a small business.
Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after U.S. Thanksgivingduring one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First observed on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local. Small Business Saturday is a registered trademark of American Express corporation.

Can social media do more to push Small Business Saturday?

SPECIAL TO THE RECORD |
THE RECORD
* Marketing push to harness the power of apps, social media
As North Jersey retailers gear up for Small Business Saturday this week, some groups hope to drum up extra foot traffic with the help of tweets and status updates on social media.
The Upper Main Alliance in Hackensack and the Englewood Chamber of Commerce are two of the many organizations that hope to draw customers on Saturday to local shops with a marketing push — which includes leveraging Facebook, Twitter and even Foursquare.
Small Business Saturday, now in its fourth year, is the brainchild of American Express to get more people to shop, ostensibly while using their credit cards, at local businesses across country. The idea is that small businesses will offer deals or discounts specifically for the day.
Albert Dib, executive director of the Upper Main Alliance, said some 166 retailers and restaurants in the city are members of the alliance, which is the core target of Small Business Saturday. Word will be spread, he said, across the different social media platforms about the deals being offered at shops in Hackensack for the day. The alliance is an advocate for the city’s business improvement district and works in conjunction with the city to address needs of the business community.

Le Bon Choix Rotisserie and Cafe : Where chicken rules the roost
By Teresa Politano | The Star-Ledger on November 16, 2014 at 7:00 AM, updated November 16, 2014 at 7:14 AM
The bread is from Balthazar, the chicken is from Goffle Road Poultry Farm in Wyckoff and the most popular topper is a fried egg.
Le Bon Choix is an homage, really, to the chicken, and it represents another unique restaurant addition to the village of Ridgewood, which is rapidly laying claim as one of New Jersey’s most distinctive foodie destinations.
On the menu? Rotisserie chicken, served with corn bread and sides (including butternut squash, potato au gratin, mac and cheese, and collard greens). Plus chicken sandwiches, such as the Lyon, which is chicken topped with white bean purée and field greens, or the Cote du Rhone, which is rotisserie chicken in an espresso barbecue sauce, with Gruyère and coleslaw.
Or skip the chicken for the gussied-up grilled cheese, with Gruyère, Parmesan and goat cheese. And yes, a burger graces the menu.
It’s a French-inspired restaurant with Southern influences, says owner Ahmed Soliman.
The restaurant’s popularity (expect a line for weekend brunch) rests on its philosophy: Start with great ingredients, keep it simple. That, plus a casual atmosphere and the rooster cookies that are popular with the kids and on Instagram.
Le Bon Choix is also a gluten-free haven, says Soliman, who offers gluten-free bread for sandwiches, gluten-free French toast for brunch and a few homemade gluten-free options for dessert.
It took Soliman two years to secure a space in Ridgewood — it’s tough to get in, but it’s a terrific location for a restaurant.

Harding Pharmacy & Liquors Set to close on 11/15
November 11,2014
Boyd Loving
Ridgewood NJ, Harding Pharmacy & Liquor, located at 305 East Ridgwood Avenue at the corner of North Maple Avenue, will be closing its doors for good on Saturday, November 15. Current proprietor Myron Lesh, who purchased the business in the early 1980’s, confirmed this when spoken to in person today.
Rumors are that a “sandwich shop” will soon occupy the premises. Mr. Lesh will become a pharmacist at an existing pharmacy located in HoHoKus; all Harding prescriptions will be transferred to that location. No word on who purchased the liquor license, which is good only in Ridgewood.
Mr. Lesh was unable to negotiate a new lease with the building’s owner, CLOTCO, Inc. of Boca Raton, Florida, whose principal owner is Emily S. Danson.
Those in the know say that Harding was in business for 50 years at the same location.
