Lessons go beyond swimming

“I’m tired…”
“No, you’re not,” said my patient Graydon Pool swim instructor Ryan Martin. “It’s all in your head.”
I tried to calm down, but my facial muscles were tense, and my treading arms were moving in frantic circles. As the water moved closer to my mouth, an irrational thought started to circle through my head.
I’m going to drown. I’m going to drown.
I’m not one to give up on things, but put me in a body of water over 6 feet and watch me freak out in five minutes.
I’m 24 years old, and I can’t really swim – but thanks to my recent adult swim lessons at Graydon Pool, at least I’m now on the right track.
So, how did I get to this point?
I took lessons at the YMCA as a kid, but I abruptly stopped, for unknown reasons, after mastering “airplane, chicken, soldier” floating. I’ve since mostly avoided swimming. Thanks to friends, I learned the basics of freestyle, but I never became skilled enough to truly enjoy swimming.
I know I’m not alone, but it often feels like it: In my experience, people who can’t swim generally are too embarrassed to liberally share that information, even if, like me, they want to swim.

Country Pancake House
Back in the late sixties, owner Milan looked for places to eat but, was not satisfied by the undeserved and overpriced options available to him. He worked hard to create his own restaurant with hearty portions to satisfy any appetite. Our large portions have fresh ingredients at reasonable prices for everyone to enjoy. We are happy to say that we purchase fresh food locally from different farms and markets.
There is always a family member on location whether in the front of house or in the back cooking. It is a family affair. As a family run business we are proud to welcome your family to our restaurant. It is frequently said that if customers leave this restaurant hungry it is their own fault!
Fans of our restaurant can also now join our Facebook and Twitter pages to keep with the latest news and happenings about the entire restaurant family!! We appreciate your customer loyalty over the years, for our wonderful Zagat Survey Reviews which landed us in multiple categories including, “Best Breakfast” and “Best Bang for your Dining Buck.” Click around our site and don’t forget to study up on the menu. GLEN ROCK — When Ridgewood’s Graydon swim team was in the water last year, success was always within reach. Unfortunately, it was the one time its swimmers were kept out of competition that overshadowed the team’s great season.
The squad attained some major achievements in 2013, including a dual-meet victory over Wyckoff and a second-place finish in the Lake League championship meet.
But the summer was marred when the New Jersey Pool Managers Association (NJPMA) ruled the team ineligible to compete in the county meet because a representative from the Graydon program had not attended the requisite four out of five NJPMA meetings.
The Graydon leadership has made sure no such penalty will be levied this year.
“Our head manager has gone to all the meetings,” said aquatics director Dan Burzinski shortly after his team’s 198-150 win over Glen Rock on Tuesday.
“That was a really tough thing. We were kind of penalized with our programs based on something that really sort of has to do with the lifeguarding,” he added. “I’m hoping that the kids that want to swim counties will have an opportunity this year, and we have a coaching staff to guide them and to cheer them on.”

Reader say the Ridgewood Bog should organize a “Night Out for Big Foot “
It’s about where the journey takes you, too — even if you come back empty handed. “I’ve been all over the States and seen some amazing things — landscapes and sunsets and hills and mountains,” Tyler says. “Even when nothing happens, you’re still in the woods. You’re still out in it.” Tyler Bounds
Readers says Recent Sightings of “Big Foot ” in Sussex County has raisied the specter that a “Big Foot” could be lurking right in our neighborhood in Ridgewood .
The Animal Planet network’s “Finding Bigfoot” crew recently visited Sussex County to search the rural area for the legendary — some would say mythical — creature who has eluded capture despite numerous purported sightings.
An article in The Daily Record of Parsippany got me thinking maybe the Boy Scots or can organize a “Night Out for Big Foot ” , lets face it a lttle back yard camping in the summer is always fun , so lets add a search for “Big Foot”.
According to Tyler Bounds, investigator with the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) and outdoor technician for Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot.
At night, listening for animal communications — hoots, hollers, screams, whistles, the sound of knocking on wood. Again, he emphasizes the importance of familiarizing yourself with local wildlife, so you can begin to eliminate possibilities with some degree of certainty.
What to bring:
1. Basic camping gear. Bring what you would bring on any other camping trip.
2. A guidebook on local wildlife. This is a must, according to Tyler. “So many people, they hear something and think ‘Is it Bigfoot?’ But it’s an owl. Or it’s a coyote. If you familiarize yourself with the local flora and fauna, it goes a long way toward knowing where to go, what to look for, and what to listen for.”
3. Means of documenting what you think you see and hear. If you end up seeing or hearing something, you’re probably going to want proof. Bring an audio recorder, a video camera, or, at the very least, a smartphone with recording capabilities.
4. A journal. This is serious stuff. A regular notebook will work, but due to the nature of ‘squatching, it’s a good idea to bring a simple audio recorder that you can use to record your observations as you move through the darkness.
5. A tape measure. If you find a footprint you want to photograph, this is great tool for providing scale and measuring your findings.
6. Night vision. Being able to see in the dark using thermal imagers and night-vision scopes can’t hurt. However, as Tyler puts it, “You can put tons of money into buying all the most modern technological geekery things, but you don’t need it.”

The $300-per-hour ‘summer planner’ for teens
By Tara Palmeri

Deep-pocketed parents are shelling out big bucks to make sure their kids are able to navigate one of life’s biggest hurdles — summer.
For about $300 an hour, experts will assist teens in managing their fun in the sun, all in an effort to help them craft that killer “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” essay and land a spot at a top college.
“In terms of writing his college essays, it was pretty much a slam-dunk,” said Marla Isackson, 57, of Tenafly, NJ, who hired “professional summer planner” Jill Tipograph to plan two trips for her son Josh, who now attends Yale.
“We made an investment in our child. It was important to us, and it was our priority.”
Josh spent two summers in China and used the experience to write the college essay that got him into the Ivy League school.
“When you apply to college, [they] look at a kid in his or her entirety in terms of interests and grades and standardized tests,” Isackson said. “The kids want to present themselves as a story.
“The fact that China was a part of his story, I think, made his story much more authentic and believable — who is this kid, what are his interests, what makes him tick,” she added.

Dual-powered locomotives to transport customers between New York Penn Station and the Jersey Shore
June 10, 2014
NEWARK, NJ — In conjunction with the Christie Administration’s continued commitment to the recovery and continued revitalization of the Jersey Shore, NJ TRANSIT today announced the launch of new, weekend rail service from New York Penn Station and northern New Jersey cities to shore communities along the North Jersey Coast Line.
The new shore service will begin on June 28, utilizing NJ TRANSIT’s new, dual-powered locomotives to provide a one-seat ride.
“NJ TRANSIT looks forward to placing our new dual-powered locomotives into service on the North Jersey Coast Line, which will entice more visitors, provide greater customer convenience and make the trip down the shore faster and easier than ever before,” said NJ TRANSIT Executive Director Veronique “Ronnie” Hakim.
Starting June 28 and continuing through September 1, four new, roundtrip express trains will be launched on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays between New York Penn Station and Bay Head. Two of these new roundtrips will be geared to beach travelers, with the additional two roundtrips providing service during the early morning and late night timeframes.
The new express service will serve New York Penn Station, Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station, Elizabeth, Rahway, Aberdeen-Matawan, Red Bank, Long Branch, Asbury Park, and then all station stops to Bay Head, without having to change trains in Long Branch. A travel time savings of approximately 25 minutes is expected from the normal travel time between New York and stations such as Belmar, Manasquan and Point Pleasant.
Seating will be limited aboard the new express service, with customers strongly encouraged to purchase round trip tickets or beach packages (a savings of $6.50 off the cost of rail service and beach admission) prior to the start of their trip. NJ TRANSIT tickets and beach packages are available at ticket windows and ticket vending machines. Customers can also purchase NJ TRANSIT tickets using MyTix mobile ticketing.
Express trains will supplement NJ TRANSIT’s regular hourly rail shuttle service between Long Branch and Bay Head, and will operate using the statewide transportation agency’s new ALP-45 dual-powered locomotives. These specialized trains will operate in electric mode between New York and Long Branch and will switch to diesel operation for travel between Long Branch and Bay Head – allowing for the one-seat ride.
The announcement follows the May 15, 2014 endorsement of the new service by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), which authorized a $270,000 allocation through the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ) to fund the new service.
Detailed schedules will be available June 17 on njtransit.com.

With opening day coming up this Saturday, the 2014 season at Graydon Pool promises to offer pool-goers several new attractions.
This year, members will be able to access the pool via a new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramp, which runs alongside an existing stone wall near the pool’s snack stand.
In addition to the ramp, the Parks and Recreation Department is now offering an adaptive aquatics class for children with special needs, through a collaboration with Mayor Paul Aronsohn and the local Community Access Network group representing those with disabilities.
“I think that we’ve just made the facility accessible and available to all residents, including sensitivity to special needs,” said Nancy Bigos, deputy director of the parks department. “I think that Graydon is really an incredible, special place and I think it has a lot to offer our residents just in the sense of community, and socialization and play.”
In addition to the adaptive aquatics class, there will be a new “introduction to diving” class and three new adult classes: an introduction to swimming for adults, an aquatic fitness program and water aerobics.
