WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama secretly wrote to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the middle of last month and described a shared interest in fighting Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria, according to people briefed on the correspondence.
The letter appeared aimed both at buttressing the campaign against Islamic State and nudging Iran’s religious leader closer to a nuclear deal.
Mr. Obama stressed to Mr. Khamenei that any cooperation on Islamic State was largely contingent on Iran reaching a comprehensive agreement with global powers on the future of Tehran’s nuclear program by a Nov. 24 diplomatic deadline, the same people say.
The October letter marked at least the fourth time Mr. Obama has written Iran’s most powerful political and religious leader since taking office in 2009 and pledging to engage with Tehran’s Islamist government.

The last thing we need are better relations with the only stable mid-eastern state besides Israel.
Oh wait…I think I just figured out why this is supposed to be a bad thing! Because Jews and Persians can’t get over millenniums old tribal conflict, the rest of us are supposed to bend to Tel Aviv’s will.
“Chosen People” doesn’t mean shit to an atheist like me. Delude yourselves if you want to, but as far as I’m concerned, we’re all in this together, so let’s learn how to play nice. That goes for the Christians and Muslims as well.
The folks in Tel Aviv just want to be left alone to live in peace you dope.
I remain utterly convinced that the so-called Arab/Muslim fixation with Israel’s location is nothing but an enormous distraction policy aimed at their people by the small minority of powerful and rich people who rule them. Under ordinary circumstances, their people would have risen long ago, being that most of them live in abject poverty. Instead, they are fed endless TV loops of “Israeli atrocities” as a way of brainwashing so as to keep their minds off the actual people who are beyond corrupt.
