Paterson NJ, in the fall of 2020, with COVID-19 at its peak, Karen Abrams and her family were moved by the many stories of those in need, and the organizations serving the community who help them.

Together with the help of Kathya Arevalo, they identified Catholic Charities’ At-Risk Youth Programs as a group that would benefit from some additional cheer around the holidays. The Abrams family was able to raise enough funds to serve delicious 4 course meals to 60 families in need.

In 2021, Karen, Kathya and their supporters took this event to a new level – raising enough funds to feed 350 families! This special event helped over 1,000 children, women and men.

“We first got involved on a whim,” Abrams said. “My family and I were feeling like we need to help people and the support that came was overwhelming. We are so proud to spread joy of the season of Thanksgiving.”

This year, Karen, Kathya, and Catholic Charities hope to raise enough funds to feed 500 families with special, catered meals just before Thanksgiving. These families are from Catholic Charities’ learning programs, youth risk reduction programs, food pantry and from neighboring organizations and community partners.

“We are so grateful to Karen, Kathya and the many volunteers and donors who support Catholic Charities each day. Thanksgiving can be a challenging time for many, especially those who are food insecure. Thanks to the the kindness of many, Catholic Charities helps uplift lives,” said Scott Milliken, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Paterson CEO.
