Fair Lawn NJ, in a situation becoming all too common in Northwest Bergen County, an out-of-state driver found herself on NJ Transit tracks after mistakenly following GPS directions. The incident occurred around 7:30 PM on Friday, October 18, when a driver from Florida, following audible GPS commands, drove onto active railroad tracks off Morlott Avenue in Fair Lawn.

The driver’s vehicle, a Lincoln Continental MKZ sedan, became stuck on the tracks just as a westbound NJ Transit train was traveling between the Broadway and Radburn stations. Fortunately, the driver managed to jump out of her car before it was struck by the train. No injuries were reported, either from the driver or the passengers and crew on board the train.

After the collision, a tow truck removed the wrecked vehicle from the tracks, and NJ Transit employees inspected the scene. Despite the dramatic crash, they found no damage to the tracks or the train. Both the Fair Lawn Police Department and NJ Transit Police investigated the incident.

This event serves as a reminder of the risks associated with relying solely on GPS, especially in unfamiliar areas, and highlights the importance of staying aware of the surroundings when driving near railroads.

  1. The only situation becoming all too common is people driving that should not be driving.

  2. Gee, this road is awfully bumpy!

    1. We all know that even the most diligent driver might not be able to tell the difference between railroad tracks and a marked and paved road.

Particularly if he/she is in Richwood.

  3. No matter how bad gps navigation might be, it simply cannot be the cause of thus accident. Route guidance doesn’t make you do this.

    1. Correct. The driver was a woman.

  4. GPS may suggest that one go left or right, but the driver turns the wheel. How did this individual safely make it all the way to Fair Lawn from Florida, being as dumb as a stump? SMH
