Paramus NJ, in the early hours of Saturday morning, a police response to a large and “unsanctioned” car meetup on Route 4 in Paramus led to the arrest of a teenager and a chaotic pursuit. The event, drawing approximately 500 vehicles, took place in the Sports Authority parking lot on Route 4 West, prompting heightened police presence and monitoring in the area.

Around 1 a.m., Paramus Officer Connor Nutland spotted a 2011 white Chevrolet Cruze parked nearby in the adjacent Ikea parking lot. As he approached, four individuals wearing ski masks entered the vehicle and attempted to flee, police reported. The driver, later identified as 18-year-old Derek Frick of Easton, PA, led police on a pursuit, evading the officer by driving into oncoming lanes and ignoring a traffic light.

The chase continued onto Route 17 South, where the vehicle eventually came to a stop. During the pursuit, Officer Nutland noticed what appeared to be a Glock handgun in the car’s door. However, after inspection, the weapon was found to be a replica BB gun, police confirmed.

Frick was subsequently arrested and charged with eluding and possession of a weapon, alongside several motor vehicle citations. The three other occupants, all minors, were released to their guardians.

Paramus Police Chief Robert Guidetti shared that the motive behind the actions of Frick and his passengers remains unclear. Although they were spotted near the large car meetup, it is still uncertain if they were involved in the gathering.

As police monitored the scene, the event attendees gradually dispersed.
