Bergen County’s first for-profit hospital welcomed guests to tour its operating suites and patient rooms in Westwood on Saturday — a week before it was to admit patients — its executives said they were already thinking about future expansion.

They expect patients will be attracted to the new hospital by the single rooms offered at no extra charge, and physicians by the $80 million investment in renovations and new technology. More than 600 doctors have already applied for admitting privileges.

“If we truly have the volume here and the support we think, within the next three years we’ll be looking to add inpatient rooms,” said Chad Melton, chief executive of the hospital now known as Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley.

As he surveyed the open space along Old Hook Road from his office window, he said he believed there would be new buildings there, “hopefully sooner rather than later.”

The hospital, a joint venture of LHP Hospital Group and Hackensack University Medical Center, shows how an investor with enormous financial resources can change the competitive landscape. LHP, the majority owner, is capitalized by the Canadian Pension Plan and CCMP Capital Advisors, a former JPMorgan private-equity unit.

Its opening celebrations — complete with fireworks Friday night — come at a time of fierce competition among Bergen County’s hospitals. The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood has been struggling to win local approval for its plan to replace some of its existing buildings with new ones that will have single-patient rooms and more modern operating rooms. Englewood Hospital and Medical Center also is seeking approval to add three stories to one of its buildings, with no change in patient rooms.

  1. Not a surprise. Valley was correct about this place. I hope Valley gets moving on their renovation so they can remain competitive.

  2. The area around Pascack Valley is zoned for offices and the development that will come with the expanded Pascack Hospital. There is no business district around Valley to support the professional offices and infrastructure that a large hospital requires. Valley is a “boutique” hospital and should revise their business plan to capitalize on that.

No matter how you look at it, Valley does not have the real estate to support expansion. They should have invested in Pascack when they had the chance.

  3. Valley should take the properties on Linwood, steilen and van dien via the eminant domain process. At the current depressed real estate values it would be a smart move for valley.

  4. Another attempt to insult the neighbors.

Just mad because Valley made a bad decision when they failed to investigate the purchase of Pascack? Valley has no land! Here is the key line from the article:

“As he surveyed the open space along Old Hook Road from his office window, he said he believed there would be new buildings there, “hopefully sooner rather than later.” Open space!!! Room for offices and professional suites!

  5. Newsflash: The ‘neighbors’ don’t run the show here. Their emotional campaign against Valley simply weakened their case and lost any support they could have had from long time residents throughout the Village.
Like it or not, Valley was there before you.
Valley will be there long after you leave.
Valley will get renovated, updated, improved, in some manner/shape or form, size yet to be determined.
Valley is not just there for Ridgewood, as it serves residents of surrounding communities.
As such, it will continue to do so without your input, advice, or approval.

    1. #5 the neighbors did get the renewal stopped so their power or will is apparent. Their case didn’t weaken my support and I’ve lived in RWD since 1958. The fact that valley will be there after we’re gone is moot, and to your point that the valley service out of town people adds to the fact that the valley is a drain on local resourses for which it pays no property tax on the main campus dont try and confuse the facts with taxes paid on other properties.

  6. “Their emotional campaign against Valley simply weakened their case and lost any support they could have had from long time residents throughout the Village.”

thats why Valley got the Renewal passed ……wrong lol

you must be on the Valley board no one else could be such an arrogant ass

or should I say a stupid arrogant ass while you pushed this stupid failed expansion HUMC has doubled in size … stuck on stupid I see , not sure how Audrey still has a job she would not if she worked for me .

keep insulting the residents that ought to work ….its been so effective so far lol

    STUPID….

Next stupid move getting the 3 stooges on the council , guess what Al recuses , Aronsohn is a political hack and if Hauck dosent recuse she is held personalty liable and this thing ends up in court for 1000 years …check mate HUMC … sorry you may have a sugar daddy Bolger but Sanzari seems a bit more on point at Hackensack . Only in Ridgewood could a bunch on incompetent small minded boobs ruin what used to be a great hospital

  7. It is not emotional. The hospital is in a residential neighborhood. The neighbors are not obligated to bow to their business plan.

Maybe you are too emotionally attached to the hospital. Get over them! Pascack is opening and they are going to take over. Business conditions will force Valley to scale back.

  8. #6 your trash mouth shows your inability to make any valid point.
You would be a perfect fit on the Jerry Springer show.
I’d say the title ‘stupid arrogant ass’ belongs to you for purchasing a cheap house in the shadow of a pre-existing commercial building with the expectation that your foul mouth would get some sort of attention from those who will determine the future expansion.
Get used to the bigger shadow over your yard from the new buildings that will be built.
Your childish comments against elected officials will do nothing but empower them. Keep it up potty mouth.
Gentlemen, start you engines…in the bulldozers! Let the construction begin!

  9. Valley Hospital epic fail.

  10. #6 & #8 – Both of you should really to make a direct point. It may be hard using the keyboard when you are in full rage but your rational argument is lost in all the name calling and insults.

  11. #10 writes “Both of you should really to make a direct point”
Please tell us you are not a product of the Ridgewood Schools.

  12. Wow, typos are a reflection of education? I admit that thumb typing on an iPhone was not taught at my school. Here, let me fix it for you:

You should really TRY to make a direct point

    Do you understand it now?

  13. #12 Your post clearly reflects a LACK of education.
Now go back to your room.

  14. This thread is one of the many reasons I have grown to hate the Village of Ridgewood.

    1. “Hate” is a strong word, but I understand. Unfortunately, impotent and anonymous internet rage is in no short supply anywhere, really. It’s not just Ridgewood. You’d like to think that the “sophisticated” people you run shoulders with on the trains, buses, and in our stores and restaurants are above such vitriol but you’d be delusional.

For what it’s worth, I’ve noticed property values kind of creeping up in Ridgewood lately. Just not around Valley. Might be a good time to cash in?

  15. So, #8, what was the point that you were trying to make? Leave out the meanness and name calling. Is it just that you are a Valley supporter or were there some facts in there?
