Allendale NJ, Nicole Virzi, PhD student who graduated from Northern Highlands Regional High School could face the death penalty for allegedly killing her friend’s newborn and injuring his twin brother, according to prosecutors. The Allegheny District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that it plans to pursue capital punishment against Virzi, 30, who is accused of violently ending the life of 6-week-old Leon Katz while babysitting him in June.

Virzi allegedly smashed the infant’s skull while caring for him in his Pittsburgh-area home, an act prosecutors claim amounts to homicide by torture. Leon’s parents, Ethan Katz and Savannah Roberts, had left their son in her care while taking his twin, Ari, to the hospital for injuries Virzi is also suspected of causing.

The county’s medical examiner ruled Leon’s death was due to blunt force trauma to the head. Court records reveal that Leon sustained a severe skull fracture, along with multiple brain bleeds. Virzi had claimed the baby fell from his bouncer, but medical experts deemed his injuries consistent with child abuse.

The UC San Diego clinical psychology student was considered a “trusted family friend” and had been staying in a local Airbnb at the time. She now faces charges of homicide, aggravated assault, and child endangerment.

While Virzi’s attorney, David Shrager, maintains her innocence, prosecutors are moving forward with the rare pursuit of the death penalty in Pennsylvania, citing multiple aggravating factors. Despite Governor Josh Shapiro’s commitment to not sign off on any death warrants during his term, the case against Virzi remains one of the most severe in the state.

  1. If she did it 6 weeks earlier, she’d be hailed as a Woman’s Rights Activist and a Healthcare Hero.
