Montville NJ, While the Montville flight made history, a new three-month pilot program is bringing the “future of food” to the masses in Green Brook. Grubhub, in partnership with Dexa and the multi-concept food hall Wonder, has officially launched a commercial drone delivery test.

How it Works

Diners ordering from Wonder’s Green Brook location—which features 15 different restaurant concepts in one building—can now select “Drone Delivery” directly in the Grubhub app.

  • Range: Available to customers within a 2.5-mile radius.

  • Cost: No additional fees beyond standard delivery and service charges.

  • The Tech: The Dexa DE-2020 aircraft, a fully automated drone that lowers your meal via a tether system so it never has to land in your yard.

“This is a glimpse into the future of how autonomous technology will help restaurants and retailers serve customers at a completely new level.” — Beth Flippo, CEO of Dexa.

🛠️ Safety and Certification: Why This is a Big Deal

This isn’t just a hobbyist with a remote control. Dexa is one of only four companies in the U.S. with FAA Part 135 Air Carrier certification. This means their drones meet the same rigorous safety standards as commercial airlines.

The Delivery Process:

  1. Preparation: Trained crew members secure the meal and follow strict food-safety guidelines.

  2. Autonomous Flight: The drone follows GPS-guided, noise-reduced routes to avoid disrupting the neighborhood.

  3. The Drop: Using a tether, the drone hovers safely above the ground while gently placing the package at the doorstep.

  4. Tracking: Customers can watch the drone’s progress in real-time via the Grubhub app.

What’s Next for New Jersey Foodies?

The Green Brook pilot will run for three months, after which Grubhub will evaluate the data to decide if drone delivery will expand to other parts of New Jersey and the country.

With Wonder’s efficient “one-facility” model and Dexa’s FAA-certified tech, the days of waiting 45 minutes for a cold pizza might be numbered. In the very near future, the sound of your dinner arriving might just be a faint hum from above.

  1. Wonder needs to crash and burn. It’s invasive.
