Fair Lawn NJ, while searching for a white colored Dodge Neon reported to be driving erratically on Saddle River Road late Saturday afternoon, 03/16, a Fair Lawn police officer spotted the vehicle driving down a private residential driveway at a high rate of speed, and directly into a heavily wooded area. The vehicle quickly became impaled on a large mulch pile and caught fire.
An individual thought to be the driver was seen running from the smoking Dodge. She was quickly apprehended and told police officers that there were children trapped in the now burning vehicle. An officer quickly used a baton to break as many windows of the vehicle as he could in an attempt to free any trapped occupants. Fortunately, no occupants were trapped. Unfortunately, the officer involved sustained minor smoke inhalation. Fair Lawn Fire Department extinguished the blaze and the vehicle was removed by a flatbed tow truck. The driver was transported by ambulance to New Bridge Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation. Saddle River Road was closed in both directions between Pennington Drive and Morlott Avenue while emergency crews worked.
