‘Porch pirates’ stole an estimated 260 million packages in the last year!

Ridgewood NJ, during the holidays, as the volume of home deliveries surges due to gift giving,and so does the chance that so-called porch pirates will grab parcels right off your front stoop. Roughly between 30% and 50% of Americans have had at least one package stolen.


Most data out there comes from surveys. C+R Research saw a 7% rise in respondents who had packages stolen from 2019 to 2020. Another survey from Insurance Quotes sampled answers from 1,000 folks and found that one in five experienced package theft.

Over the last year, an estimated 260 million delivered packages were stolen, according to a report from SafeWise, an online guide to security and safety products. A year ago, the estimate was 210 million.

With the holiday shipping frenzy in full swing there could be more packages disappearing this month than ever. The total annual loss to this type of theft is an estimated $19.5 billion, according to SafeWise.
