Fort Lee NJ, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today announced that its three major airports continued their record-setting pace through the first seven months of the year, surpassing 2019 numbers. The agency also reported that the seaport was the nation’s busiest for the month of July, handling its highest total of TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) since October 2022. The agency also released monthly and year-to-date facility volumes at the agency’s airports, bridges and tunnels, PATH commuter rail and seaport.

Airports:

For seven consecutive months starting in January, Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports have continued to serve a record high number of passengers. Year to date through July 2023, the three airports served more than 82 million passengers, an increase of about 2 million, or 2.5 percent, from the same point in 2019.

In July 2023, the three major airports served nearly 13 million passengers, an increase of about 500,000 travelers, or 4 percent, from the month prior. The airports were boosted by strong travel demand during this year’s Fourth of July holiday period, when a record high number of air passengers — more than 2 million — used the region’s major airports. The total exceeded regional holiday travel levels in pre-pandemic 2019 by 2 percent, and also outperformed other airports around the country that saw a nationwide decrease of 2.4 percent compared to the holiday in 2019, according to the Transportation Security Administration. The month-over-month improvement was largely thanks to increased demand for international travel. The July 2023 air passenger level was essentially flat compared to July 2019.

Port of New York and New Jersey:

The seaport was the nation’s busiest in July 2023, moving 725,479 TEUs, its highest monthly total since October 2022.

In July the seaport saw its cargo volume jump by 16.2 percent compared to the month prior. This extremely strong showing was driven by dramatic increases in shipments of apparel, toys, games, and sporting equipment, which combined saw a 40 percent increase. The port also moved 9.4 percent more cargo this July compared to July 2019. The strong performance in July resulted in the Port of New York and New Jersey leapfrogging over other U.S. ports. The increase also reflects shipping companies’ continued confidence in operational reliability and speed at the New York-New Jersey gateway.

Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals:

At the agency’s six vehicular crossings, traffic volume in July 2023 was largely flat compared with pre-pandemic levels in July 2019, and about 2 percent higher than June 2023.  In July 2023, over 10.7 million eastbound vehicles used the crossings.

PATH:

In July 2023, the PATH commuter railroad reported an average weekday ridership of 162,386 passengers, which was consistent with June 2023. PATH served a total of more than 4 million riders in July 2023, which was a 15 percent increase compared to July 2022. It was 58 percent of the same metric in July 2019.
