Ocean city NJ, Protect Our Coast issues the following official statement Orsted’s decision to cease development of Ocean Wind 1 & 2:
We have just learned that Orsted is going to withdraw from its investment in offshore wind in New Jersey. Obviously, we are pleased that Orsted has decided to walk away from Ocean Wind 1 and 2. We are still studying the longer term implications of this decision. Protect Our Coast New Jersey has always maintained that these projects were never economically feasible nor were they environmentally friendly or sustainable.
Because Orsted will retain the rights to the development of the seabed, we must be cautious that today’s announcement is not just another delay in the industrial development of the ocean off our shores.
Without billions of dollars in tax breaks and subsidies, these projects never made sense and could not stand on their own. When you consider the fact that the offshore wind industry would have had a negligible impact on carbon emissions, and the extreme cost to our coastal environment, Ocean Wind 1 and 2 never made sense.
POCNJ will remain vigilant in protecting the Jersey shore, our ocean environment and the negative impact offshore wind development or any coastal development would have on small businesses, commercial and recreational fishing and on our communities.
