Ridgewood NJ, If you see crews in the trees behind Ridgewood High School this week, don’t be alarmed—it’s all part of a major push to keep the lights on. PSE&G has officially launched its annual vegetation management program, aimed at preventing power outages by pruning branches that threaten overhead electrical lines.
With the increasing frequency of severe weather in North Jersey, this work is a critical line of defense for our local grid. Here is everything Ridgewood residents need to know about the current pruning schedule and what it means for your property.
Where and When?
The work kicked off today in the PSE&G right-of-way directly behind Ridgewood High School. While this is the current focus, crews will be moving throughout various neighborhoods across the Village for the remainder of the year.
A Focus on Arboricultural Standards
The Village of Ridgewood has been in active communication with PSE&G and their contracted landscaping teams. While this project is managed entirely by the utility company, Village representatives have emphasized a clear standard: minimal invasiveness.
Crews are expected to perform all pruning according to professional arboricultural standards to ensure that, while the lines are cleared, the health and aesthetic of our local trees are preserved as much as possible.
What to Expect if Your Property is Affected
If your trees are near the utility’s path, PSE&G representatives will provide advance notice before work begins.
Tree Removal Protocols
In certain instances where pruning isn’t enough to ensure safety, a tree may need to be removed entirely. The responsibility for the aftermath depends on where the tree stands:
| Tree Location | Removal Responsibility | Stump Removal Responsibility |
| Private Property (Inside the sidewalk) | PSE&G | Homeowner |
| Public Right-of-Way (Village side) | PSE&G | Village of Ridgewood |
Why Is This Work Necessary?
Tree-related interference is the #1 cause of power outages during storms. By maintaining a clear “right-of-way” around power lines, PSE&G can:
-
Reduce Outages: Prevent branches from snapping onto lines during high winds or heavy snow.
-
Improve Restoration Time: Allow crews easier access to equipment if repairs are needed.
-
Safety: Decrease the risk of live wires being pulled down into pedestrian areas.
Stay Informed
While the Village is monitoring the progress, this project is under the sole jurisdiction of the utility. For the most up-to-date maps, schedules, or to report a specific concern near your home, visit nj.pseg.com.
