Hackensack NJ, In a high-stakes situation where seconds mattered, members of the Hackensack Police Department demonstrated exceptional skill and calm under pressure, bringing a dangerous mental health crisis to a safe, peaceful resolution.
On July 19, 2026, officers responded to a distress call at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Polifly Road following reports of a woman threatening self-harm with a knife.
Decisive Action and De-escalation Save a Life
Upon arriving at the scene, Officer Caneja of the Hackensack Police Emergency Service Unit, along with Officers Angeles and Vicale from the Patrol Bureau, encountered a woman holding a large knife to her neck and threatening suicide.
Relying heavily on modern de-escalation techniques and swift tactical action, the officers successfully disarmed the woman and secured the weapon without any injuries to the individual or officers on scene.
Chief Antista commended all officers involved for their bravery, professional standards, and commitment to safeguarding community members during life-threatening encounters.
“Their quick reaction during this stressful encounter brought about a safe conclusion to a potentially deadly situation. These officers exemplify the high standards that the residents of the City of Hackensack expect from their police force.”
The Power of Mental Health Awareness Training in Policing
Situations involving severe emotional distress require specialized approaches. In recent years, mental health awareness training has become a core element of the Hackensack Police Department’s regimen.
By equipping officers with the skills to recognize psychological distress and apply de-escalation strategies, the department consistently works to turn potentially tragic encounters into successful, supportive outcomes. Thanks to these efforts, the individual involved on Polifly Road was safely transported to receive the medical and mental health support needed.
