MAHWAH, NJ — The Ramapough Mountain Indians Inc. have announced the upcoming 4th Annual Ramapough Family Day, inviting all tribal members to gather for a day of community, celebration, and culture.

The event will take place from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Stag Hill Park, located at 189 Stag Hill Rd, Mahwah, NJ 07430 (directly across from the Ramapough Community Center).

Attendees can look forward to a completely free afternoon featuring:

  • FREE Food & Refreshments

  • Live Music & Entertainment

  • Family-Friendly Activities & Games

  • Community Giveaways

Organizers note that while the event provides extensive amenities, attendees are highly encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs for comfortable seating throughout the afternoon. Additional details regarding the specific date and scheduled activities are expected to be released soon.

Preserving Heritage and Community Bonds

The annual gathering serves as a vital touchpoint for the New Jersey state-recognized tribe, which comprises approximately 5,000 members living throughout the Ramapo Mountains of Bergen and Passaic counties in northern New Jersey, as well as Rockland County in southern New York.

Recognized by the State of New Jersey in 1980 as the Ramapough Lenape Nation, the tribe claims a rich, multifaceted lineage tracing back to the historic Lenape regional bands—including the Hackensack, Tappan, Rumachenanck/Haverstroo, Munsee/Minisink, and Ramapo people. Over the centuries, the community has also integrated Tuscarora, African, and European (predominantly Dutch) ancestries.

Beyond celebrating local community ties, events like Family Day underscore ongoing tribal initiatives, including a dedicated cultural push to restore the traditional Munsee language—an Algonquian dialect historically native to the region—among its current generations.
