Ramsey NJ, It is with deep sadness that the Ramsey Fire Department announces the passing of one of its most cherished members, Richard Scalione, who passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 80. Richard, known for his decades of service to the community, was a longtime resident of Ramsey and previously of Ridgewood. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and kindness.

Richard was the beloved husband of “Dolly” M. Scalione and the late Barbara Scalione, who predeceased him in 2012. He was a devoted father to Michael and Thomas Scalione, and the late Margaret E. Halpin, who passed in 2022. He is survived by his daughters-in-law, Jane and Rebecca, and son-in-law Robert Halpin.

A man of deep faith, Richard was a parishioner at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel RC Church in Ridgewood, where he was active in the Knights of Columbus and the Perpetual Adoration Society.

Richard’s service to the Ramsey Fire Department spanned an incredible 59 years, where he was not only a senior member but also a trusted leader. His contributions extended to the Ridgewood Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for 40 years, including time as Captain. In addition to his firefighting duties, Richard was the Chief of the Ramsey Rescue Squad, exemplifying his lifelong commitment to helping others in times of need.

His dedication didn’t stop there. For 40 years, Richard served as Secretary of the NorthWest Bergen Mutual Aid Association and also as a County Coordinator. He was instrumental in supporting the coordination of emergency services across the region.

Beyond his professional and volunteer commitments, Richard found joy in his community. He was a member of the Ridgewood Kasschau Band Shell Committee and enjoyed delivering flowers for Perry’s Florist in Ridgewood during Valentine’s Day, spreading love and cheer with each delivery.

The Ramsey Fire Department, and the broader community, will deeply miss Richard’s warm presence, tireless service, and selfless dedication. He will be remembered not only for his contributions as a firefighter but for the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.

Our hearts go out to Richard’s family, especially to his son, Captain Mike Scalione, during this difficult time. We thank Richard for his extraordinary service and honor his memory, knowing his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of firefighters and community members.
