These disruptive attacks often spread throughout districts, causing schools to cancel classes and exams. In some cases, they also impact municipal or police department networks. Roughly 1,000 schools in 62 districts were impacted by ransomware attacks in 2021. The FBI and New Jersey Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Cell discourage paying ransoms, as payments perpetuate attacks and do not guarantee full recovery of data. If impacted by a ransomware incident, the NJCCIC recommends reimaging and restoring from valid backups, scanning restored systems to ensure they are free of the infection and remediating the initial attack vector used to gain network access.
