Ridgewood NJ, Millions of Americans will have the chance to witness a rare celestial alignment on Wednesday, August 12, as a partial solar eclipse passes overhead. While it won’t produce the complete daytime darkness seen during the historic 2024 total solar eclipse, it offers skywatchers a dramatic view of the moon taking a visible bite out of the sun.
While total totality will be restricted to parts of Europe, Greenland, and Iceland, observers across the U.S. East Coast, Midwest, and Alaska can expect noticeable atmospheric dimming.

How Dark Will the Sky Get?
Unlike a total solar eclipse, the sky will not turn completely dark, nor will stars become visible during midday. However, regions along the East Coast and Alaska will experience a noticeable drop in daylight brightness as the moon covers a significant portion of the solar disk.
This event serves as a stepping stone toward the upcoming August 2, 2027 total solar eclipse—an event dubbed by NASA as the “Eclipse of the Century” due to its extraordinary totality duration of up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds.
Essential Eye Safety & Viewing Methods
Looking directly at the sun during a partial solar eclipse without specialized equipment can cause permanent eye damage.
1. Certified Solar Glasses
Always use ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses or handheld viewers. Standard sunglasses, even polarized ones, do not provide adequate protection. Camera lenses, binoculars, and telescopes also require specialized solar filters.
2. Pinhole Projection Method
If you do not have certified solar glasses, you can safely observe the shadow cast by a homemade pinhole projector. Creating a pinhole in a piece of cardstock or aluminum foil projects an image of the crescent sun onto the ground or a flat surface without direct eye exposure.
