“I saw that question about backyard pickup. as a long time resident (51 years) I can speak on behalf of many long timers who live here. Leave it alone. We do not have children in schools and get very little for our tax dollars. It’s one of the things that makes it a bit nicer here than other towns, we don’t park cars on our front lawns, don’t store motor home or boats in the yard, we don’t store commercial vehicle in our yards , we must comply with keeping lawns from being overgrown, we must not allow peeling paint on our home…… All of which preserves your property values and keeps inconsiderate neighbors from ruining a neighborhood. If people had respect for their neighbors then it would not have to b legislated. The old timers with no kids in school subsidize all of those who do. If we sell, it will be to w family with children utilizing th schools at a greater expense to those remaining. Years ago people would stick around and not bail out back to Manhattan after the last kid graduates rhs. The turnover of real estate will escalate faster if you take away the few things left that keep the village nicer than waldwick or midland park. For our tax dollars the seniors get nothing and want nothing.. But leave th garbage cans in the backyard.
Ps. The new residents are so lazy that they leave the recycling containers on the curb for days after. A pick up. It would he disgusting if we had garbage cans lying around too.”
The ONLY way to keep your taxes from going up is to encourage those who do not use the schools to stay here.
“Nicer than Midland Park or Waldwick.” Spoken like a true Ridgewood snob. Trust me – your village is nothing special.
But you do leave piles of leaves blocking the road for weeks at a time. You do throw other yard waste in the piles of leaves, even though it looks terrible, violates leaf collection rules and slows the whole process.
What do backyard garbage pick up and not bagging leaves have in common? Laziness.
What do backyard garbage pickup and not baggging leaves not have in common? Making the place look nicer.
Hypocrite much?
Hypocrite…
Some seniors have friends, family and possibly a service that takes care of leaves and yard work. I know a few that are in houses with very little grass or trees.
A known fact, if you are a senior and cannot take your garbage to the curb when we are told if there is ice or snow, call sanitation and they will make sure to pick up from the rear of your house.
They are a little more able-bodied than us seniors.
We feel that recycling and yard waste or on the curb line why can’t sanitation be on the curb line. There’s no reason for sanitation workers to be walking behind residence home. Think about how much time we can save. I think the village should try it,
Yes what’s with all the motorhomes parked In backyards driveways looks terrible . They look like a bunch of hillbillies. But then again Midlandpark was always a hillbilly town they can have it.
How much of a savings is curbside? I seem to recall numbers I have seen in the past that indicated the savings is modest compared with the inconvenience. I also believe this is one of the small perks that seniors have who elect to stay in the Village. Don’t take it away.
““Nicer than Midland Park or Waldwick.” Spoken like a true Ridgewood snob. Trust me – your village is nothing special.”
.
Ridgewood is not as nice as it used to be and is on the decline, but it is still nicer than Midland Park or Waldwick.
.
Just the facts…. and you know it to be true.
.
Bring it to the damn curb.
Bring it to the damn curb. It’s 2020 let’s get with the times. Stop being lazy, I don’t mind bringing my garbage to the curb. I’m bringing my recycling to the curb. I bring my yard waste to the curb. And I bring my cleanup once a month to the curb. And to be honest with you I love my garbageman but I don’t want them in my backyard. Nothing personal touch my privacy.
The minute Ridgewood goes to curbside I’ll just move full time to my Florida place, which is already my permanent residence. I can’t sell my place here since I’ll get dinged on capital gains, so I’ll just will it to my heirs. But in the interim, I’ll make good use of the 5 bedrooms. I can fit 3 beds in each, so plenty of room for 15+ young people from Paterson willing to take advantage of the excellent schools. Unlike the new people here I can AFFORD to do this and I’ll laugh every time I send a check for my 31k tax bill. Get used to larger classes or split sessions. Was putting the cans on the curb worth it?
All part of dumbing down of the village with the new people with zero consideration for their neighbors. Want to Save money? Stop pissing away money on sport field like habernickel and shedler
To commenter #2. Sounds like you got a chip on your shoulder because you can’t afford to live here . I’m not paying big $$ to look at garbage cans tossed all over the town or your hillbilly motor home on the property line. Maybe you can get invited as a participant on the jerry springer show…douchebag
You bet it’s nicer than midland park or waldwick. Let’s compare downtown:
Ridgewood: beautiful architecture with many blocks of shops and al fresco dining.
Midland park: kings shopping center and Burger King.
Waldwick: rite aid parking lots. Burger King.
Case closed
Backyard pick up is a must and we are not seniors. Why does dpw throw the cans all over, looks horrible. Another train to have back yard pick up
The high school is joke in midlandpark. And for all the Motorhomes on their property is a big joke not only it looks terrible it looks like shit . And please don’t come back and tell us That your motorhome is so expensive. no one cares. I can’t believe the mayor of all people allow that. The town became a melting pot. The mayor should tell everyone who has a boat or a motorhome to go park it down off Godwin Avenue by the moving vans. And the taxes are not cheep any more. I’m in this town 45 years and I don’t like it and I’m telling my accounts have a police do their job. Do you want the bolts and motorhomes removed from their property. ……
What are you people talking about I’m in town for 40 years and I have to put my recycling cans yard waste out at the curb so what are you talking about. Big deal for my taxes they could walk in my backyard and retrieve my garbage big deal. I’m 72 years old. And I Drag my cans out.so you can too lazy ass.
I would never move into midlandpark. Why would we. The school system sucks. Period, yes maybe it’s better than hawthorn! .I love it that they ride around in there pick ups like it’s in Lincoln’s. Get a life you red necks. And in the end you need Ridgewood ‘s money .right.
Our garbage men are union employees and are well compensated with medical benefits and defined pension benefits. If you want to save money, get a private carter to bid the routes with back yard pickup and financial penalties for missed pickups. Its not like the old days when the territories were protected by the mob. Public companies like waste management and others will bid against each other, along with some left-overs from the ‘old days’ . For you new arrivals, the only reason we have our own trucks and employees is around 1969 our private carter had a strike and no other carters would step up and do the job. Again, one of the few nice things that differentiate the Village is not having to look at garbage cans tossed all over the place. Its bad enough that the lazy residents leave their recycling and yard waste containers on the curb for DAYS after the pick up, and put them out DAYS before the pickup. So the poster ‘old resident’ is full of it. Shes a new transplant from NYC. Old timers have some class vs being an ass.
The survey said eliminating this would save about $500k. How many millions for Schindler? The garage? The water company palace? The library?
I don’t know what the motives are here, but saving money can’t be number 1. Maybe the union doesn’t want to do the work. No one’s telling. I’d say it’s a good suggestion to bid it out
NOTICE HOW the Midland Park and Waldwick people READ the RIDGEWOOD blog.
.
How many of you RIDGEWOOD folks read the “Midland Park Blog” or the “Waldwick blog” ?
.
I think the village of Ridgewood should try curbside pick up for one month see how it works and go from there. At least give it a try. Especially around the heavy times of the year
Just read these comments – it’s no wonder who raised the entitled millennial generation. Once again the entitled Ridgewood attitude strikes again.
There is no point in “trying” out something that degrades the village for no purpose.
Every winter when we have snow, we are mandated to put the cans at the curb, and we do so. The place looks like a shithole because the lazy residents never bring the empty cans back in after they are dumped.
And our well paid Union garbage men get a bonus. Since they are paid for “task work” they get done earlier than usual and get to go home while getting a full day’s pay. The next union contract should mandate that on any snow day when they finish early, it’s time to go plow snow, just like NYC sanitation.( where all of you people who like to look at garbage on th curbs moved here from)
Same crap from the same people who want to eliminate the paid fire department.
If you want to save tax money, look at the board of educations bloated budget. Increase class sizes to 30 students and eliminate tenured teachers. If your kid can’t keep up, hire a tutor.
Certain things keep the town nice. Don’t move here and try to change it.
I love my garbage men they work hard. My husband and I appreciate what they do..just because they don’t go to work in a suit an tie doesn’t mean that they don’t work hard..they work very hard to keep us happy. I would imagine it takes guts to go out and do what they do each and every day. So as I read these comments I see how privileged an lazy some of you are.
