Reader says NJ Ez pass is a scam

1018EZPass

NJ Ez pass is a scam. My personal experience (I have ny account take was issued before nj had the ezpass ). My account has always been in good standing, automatic credit card reimbursement, etc. I have 4 current tags. I put a tag in my newly obtained vehicle with out of state plates while it was here for a month. The garden state parkway toll in wash twps said “tag not read”. To avoid issues, that plate was added to the account 15 minutes later. I received a violation notice (despite meeting all the criteria for NOT being a violation) demanding 1.50 toll and $50 administration fee. I replied as requested online, on the phone, and using their automated system 11 times. They kept sending their lying bs notice. I finally had the last clerk on the phone admit that “their new system was having problems “. I paid the 1.50 toll with a credit card, and made it clear if she tried to ding me the 50 I would dispute the charge and suggest that the local us attorney investigate their practices. Apparently that is how NJ tries to strong arm payments that ate NOT due from unsuspecting motorists who think they may have a registration revoked (it’s not possible ). NJ EZ pass is a corrupt organization (based on my personal experience) and should be investigated. If it was a private company the executives would be indicted for mail fraud wire fraud and corruption for extorting money from motorists that is not due.

  1. My experience was totally the opposite. I started by talking to a person so maybe the machines are what is programmed incorrectly. My old tag could not be read by the overhead vendors. I received the full turnpike fee two separate times and both times she corrected it. If you think our system is bad go to a state or town with intersection cameras. We were sent a perfect view of our grandson’s jeep, the license plate and his face as well as the red light he went through as it changed to yellow.

  3. That’s why I have a dash cam with gps. My speed is accurate, if some jerk with road rage causes an accident, or if some jaywalker jumps in front of my car I can prove I was right.
For $250 bucks it’s worth it.
I’m the original poster. NJ ex pass is corrupt. No violation from the tappan zee bridge or Delaware bridge. Just the state of new jerkey. My equipment was not the problem and my account was current and compliant and the other agencies got their $ as per my statement.

    1. I got 2 violations and I never been to NJ. The picture is of a roll off truck mine is a 1990 trooper. I don’t know how to fix it.

  4. ez pass is a scam!!!! first the pass doesn’t read and then you get a violation letter then when u refuse to pay your pass no longer works. so now I pay cash, using $1 dollar bills every morning in the same 2 cash lanes everyday and I get a violation with a fuzzy photo of a license plate with a car like mine in a different lane and they expect me to pay!! I refuse!!
also, beware of broken lanes!!! if the toll box is full of dollar bills do they expect us to clean it!!!! if multiple cars in the same lane show toll unpaid then there must be something wrong am I right???? ez pass you are trying to STEAL MONEY FROM US!!!!

    1. Hey Tesha, my name is Colleen and I am a reporter for a local newspaper. We are trying to track down people who have been “banned” from E-ZPass, it sounds like you became wrongfully banned. Please get in touch with me, would love to hear more about what happened. My email: cwilson2@gannettnj.com.

  5. I received an EzPass violation notice twice from the same toll plaza on the Delaware river crossing on I-78. Here’s the problem I have never owned, used or possessed an EzPass device and never will. I paid cash as always, on their website I found a photo of my car which clearly displays my car stopped my window open, and my hand out the window as I paid.

After trying to dispute their claim by mailing the dispute form, I received a final notice. So like an idiot I called only to be talked down to by one of their smart mouth employees talking to me like I was garbage. They claim they didn’t receive the dispute for, yet a few minutes later claimed they couldn’t read it on their screen, and their image of my car was blurred??? So they suggested they would waive the $30 fee if I paid the $3 toll which I already paid. This EzPass organization is run by criminals that are robbing the public.

Incidentally when researching this specific toll plaza I discovered a news article which mentioned that at least one of their toll collectors had stolen $15,000 in tolls. I was a victim, I paid my toll which went directly into the collectors pocket, they don’t register my toll as paid so I get a “violation” . Pretty good scam and fully backed by the massively corrupt NJ government.

  6. That’s funny (not funny “haha” of course), but having been a NJ motorist who has to pass through NY tolls, I’ve always found NY ezpass to be the corrupt ones.
I believe you of course; this only convinced me that each EZpass system is incentivized to shake down out-of-state motorists.
They would probably argue that all of the waste, fraud, and abuse that they engage in is necessary to keep in business, but the Massachusetts EZpass system is inexpensive and largely free from corruption.

  7. After the EZpassNJ sent me to collection for $100 that I do not owed them I realized that We the people are dealing with a corrupt and criminal organization. I hoped never but never will transit again thru those roads.

  8. NJ Ezpass is the biggest scam ever. I had my Ezpass and I had enough money in it, I went to NJ from NY and on passing the toll, it reads call customer service. I called customer service NY right away and they told me nothing was wrong with my Ezpass and my account was in good shape, the representative told me that it happens sometimes and that I shouldn’t worry about it. Only for me to receive a violation via mail and an admin fee of $50 each. A toll worth $1.25 would be $51.25 and the other worth $2 would be $52. I called Ezpass NY and they picked up within 5min and told me that they can’t see the violation from their end and that I should call Ezpass NJ. I’ve been calling the customer service line for over 2 hrs and no one responded even while they told me that my wait time was 40min. I called the next day around 9am and for another 1hr : 30min no representative was able to answer my call. This is very frustrating and very unprofessional. They want me to go online and make the payment when I vividly spoke to a customer service the moment I noticed I wasn’t charged. This is unbelievable! I’m not paying for that violation and will take it to any length!

  9. The real reason the states wanted Ezpass so badly is so that people don’t have to dig out cash at toll booths. That way the state can much more easily raise tolls with less people noticing and griping.

  10. I’ve had EZ Pass since its inception on all 5 of my cars. The few problems I’ve had had been easily rectified either online or with a polite phone call.

  11. 100% extortion. My wife made a trip to Atlantic City for a convention, traveling on the Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Atlantic City Expressway. Despite having an up to date E-Z Pass on the car, they still sent us a bill with a photo of the car/license plate for the $1.00 toll plus a $50 penalty. This despite us having an operating E-Z Pass tag that was read on the same trip, and even ON THE SAME ROAD (the Atlantic City Expressway).
Twice I sent in appeals showing that we had an up to date E-Z Pass, attached to the car, with the car on the account, THAT WAS READ SEVERAL TIMES ON THE SAME TRIP. Even waited on hold twice for about half an hour to speak to a CSR to explain the same thing.
Then, again, like a month later, they had a credit collection agency contact me saying they had a claim against me of $51, although they would ‘settle’ with me for $38.
    100% bullish*t. 100% extortion. Disgraceful.
