Reader says the school resource officer is a great idea.

BUT let’s be perfectly TRANSPARENT here. The three amigos were dead set against hiring the two young men who are sons of cops, one of whom they detest. Then there was a HUGE backlash for them, at the meeting and on the blog. So, they figured out they could save their asses by saying it would be OK to change the ordinance IF a school resource officer was added to the mix. Voila, they all changed their votes one week later.

it is not because Aronsohn, Pucciarelli and Hauck want a school resource officer. This was just a convenient way for them to “save face” after such a widespread outrage at their votes the week before.

So they think they look like thoughtful, reasonable people who can change their minds for all the right reasons. In fact, they changed their minds ONLY because people were so pissed at them. They are despicable people, the three of them.

In any case, I hope the ordinance goes forward, because it should, and I hope those two young men are at the academy in a couple of weeks, as they should have been all along.

RECALL.

All meetings of the Ridgewood Planning Board (i.e., official public meetings, work session meetings, pre-meeting assemblies and special meetings) are public meetings which are always open to members of the general public.

  1. If the village is short of police to do there job now then why create or have a resource officer at this time.

  2. its forward thinking. They hopefully will hire two more soon allowing to ease some of the overtime and for the dept to do some internal training. This is being looked at as a long term gaol.

Also, they are looking into grants that previously existed to help fund the program.

  3. what will the “resource officer” actually do?

  4. #3 Look up School Resource Officer on line it will give you most of the info.

  5. who,s paying for this.

  6. yeah, but what will the resource office do?

  7. What a stupid idea.

The crime and security concerns in RW schools is so rampant that we need dedicated SROs…not.
Any security/crime issues are currently handled very well by onsite staff and the RW police respond promptly and professionally in the rare instances when they are needed.

The only outcome of this move (aside from serving nepotism and politcs) is:
    – the negative impact on RWs rating and the associated lowering of property values(hey realtor, explain to me again why this town needs a dedicated police presence in the schools where I plan to send my kids…)
    – and RW ranking #1 in bullying arrests!

  8. Ridgewood had a school resource officer for about 10 years 1st. Lt Killion, the Det McDowell, there was no nepotism or politics involved, and there was no negative impact at all. Fact of the matter is it was well received by faculty and parents alike. personnel cutbacks put an end to the program.

  9. #7 Spoken like a true Ostrich. Head in the sand our somewhere else.

  10. There are no problem in our school system #7 knows this because they haven’t read anything in The Ridgewood News. Our schools in Ridgewood are special they have no problems unlike all the other schools in the nation.

  11. 7 your ignorance is amazing.

It’s not to patrols the schools…. It is to establish a link between the pd and the kids. It the exact opsit of what you are stating. The pd wants kids to feel comfortable to come to them with issues and problems, perhaps issues that they can’t even tell thier parents or school officials.

Cut it out with the nepotism crap… It’s getting old…

  12. The PD should develop a link with the kids – they’re the ones who are going to have to pay for all of the promises made on entitlements when these guys retire – the school resource officer should be thanking every kid they see for future benefits ! Also, shouldn’t it be the Guidance Counselor who the kids bring their issues and problems to ? Or is this a chance for cops to delve in to personal issues of Ridgewood families ? We know the RPD keeps tabs on people, sounds very NSA-like !

  13. #12 your post reeks malevolence, and disdain, for anything the local govt. is trying to do. If nothing else, perhaps a good school resource officer will be a positive influence on some of the school children and help them make better decisions with regards to behavior, and all kinds substance use. Your last 2 sentences used in this context show deep rooted issues regarding authority, and paranoia, that pollute debate on a school resource officer.

  14. Maybe parents, with the help & support of school guidance counselors, should be working with their kids on behavior and avoiding substance abuse ?

  15. #14 along with the cops, because an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, no puns intended.
