Readers call North Broad Street and Franklin Avenue By far, the most dangerous crossing in town

This intersection and Ridgewood Ave. and Broad are the two worst in the village and it strikes me that the village police really do not care, same goes for our lousy politicians.

By far, the most dangerous crossing in town. I do it every evening. The new train station made that corner a bottleneck for anyone who lives east of the tracks and walks (Thanks NJT for thinking that one through!). We typically can’t cross when the light is red, an when the light is green, there are people coming under the bridge and making a right turn around a blind corner.

The problem, ironically, is the No Turn on Red rule. It encourages drivers to beat the yellow or get stuck at a light. That is often when commuters are also trying to cross the street or get stuck in the rain. If a turn on red were possible, my theory is that drivers wouldn’t worry about the light as much and be more careful.

  1. I suppose not one single member of the Planning Board knows how dangerous that intersection is. Otherwise they would not be proposing a change in the Village’s Master Plan that would mandate the contruction of buildings sure to bring more traffic to the CBD, including a massive building right at that very intersection.

  2. I think if you check with the po-po they’ll tell you franklin and chestnut is more dangerous than broad and franklin.

  3. What about broad and ridgewood av. people ignore the stop sign constantly and it is just pure luck no one has been killed at any of these intersections.

  4. The Chief of Police will come out and do his pedestrian safety walk, get his picture in the paper and then disappear till the next time.

  5. yea what about the n j t bus line they are real bad. and what is this new bull shit about yeld to the bus,s now. they fly in and out of the c b d. take a look for your self. and jerks who just walk off the side walks and think it is safe to do so. the law is not working.me I don’t give a hoot about the law. I tell my kid’s you stop and look to see if it is safe then walk, and wave at the drivers and thank them. that works. and it;s safe. we don’t need to pay police to try and screw drivers that don’t stop. some times you can not stop. how can you if some walks off the curb real fast. the sweed in the c b d should be 15 , try that. beleve me i know, i see it all day.
    the bro,s know

  6. 15 would be good. we should try it.
any one know who will the nexed police boss.

  7. I was mistaken in my original post: you can make a right on red there. So there are people coming around that corner from basically underground, blind, and rolling through a red when they should be coming to a complete stop. Add rain and darkness during a winter evening rush and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

Like #5 said, you just have to be careful. I like that Ridgewood has a CBD with a bustle about it…otherwise I would have moved to West Milford or wherever. IMO there should be a couple beat cops esp Thursday / Friday, giving tickets to drivers racing around looking for parking.

  8. so true.how about trying this, shuting down the main av on friday and saturday nights and make it family night.I this it would be great.
