Readers give advice on stopping unrequested newspapers in their driveways
It would be good, I think, if Ridgewood offered a permanent OPT OUT program that once homeowners sign up they will not have to be harassed by this trash anymore.
These are Advertisement Flyers being tossed. They’re not news papers. How can the Village Of Ridgewood website tell people those unrequested newspapers(?) are a ‘free speech issue’??
Call it what it is, Advertisement Flyers from Kmart, Sears, RiteAid, Verizon, The Record a form to subscribe to, ShopRite, plus others, etc. No papers. All these ad flyers used to be delivered by regular mail service weekly to your mailbox. a/k/a ‘junk mail’. They stopped coming, and instead now ‘junk’ Ad Flyers get tossed on your private property. An infringement on private property owners rights.
I believe Free speech flyers hand outs are only permitted/ allowed on public property, or if door to door, a solicitor permit required. If an organization wishes to solicit door to door in VOR, they need to apply for a permit. Did The Record apply for a solicitor permit for Advertisement Flyers to be tossed onto private residential properties?

Unwanted Newspapers – Information to End Delivery of Non Requested Newspapers
Residents have called Village Hall asking for a way to stop the unrequested newspapers in their driveways – we recommend resident personally contact the appropriate company at the phone number listed on the publication.
To contact The Record – call 888-473-2673; ask to be placed on the “Non Subscriber’s List”.
It may take a few calls to stop the delivery.
The Village of Ridgewood cannot regulate these deliveries as it is a “Freedom of Speech” issue.
Thank you for the phone number. I’ll try it.
Also email –
wsjsupport@wsj.com
(for the wall street journal and barrons papers)
Email –
circulation@northjersey.com
It works for a while. You might have to email them every so often to remind them.
Just now while having breakfast I heard the dreaded thumps of garbage being thrown on my property and my neighbors’ as well. It was the New York Times with all it’s bad news and plastic bag littering my home once again. I’ve emailed them several times to ask them to stop delivery. But to no avail.
Something’s got to be done. This is getting ridiculous – I have far better things to do than pick up trash that I never asked for or wanted.
Everything I’ve done has failed to get this garbage stopped. Phone calls, emails, letters to these companies over the years have proved fruitless. Oh, it’ll get it stopped for a while – a week, maybe even a month giving me false hope. But then the garbage comes right back and often with more and other junk newspapers added to the pile.
Blitzing the Mayor, Council and Town Hall with calls, emails and letters seems to be the only option to stop this littering of Ridgewood.
I can’t do this alone.
Are you in?
Get your butt out there pick up the paid flyers, newspapers, phone books, political stuff, wind blown newspapers pick up day………. somebody is trying to earn a living at those jobs.
Your Blog writers can spend more time planning interesting news to share.
We need to blitz the Mayor, Council, Town Hall with calls, emails, letters. I don’t see any other way to get this trash stopped without their help.
They need to get a real job. I’m busy working at mine. Are you?
By law they need to stop delivery once a request to OPT OUT is made.
Since when is littering “a job”?
sign a littering complaint if they ignore the ‘stop’ request. If you are away and these papers ‘advertised’ to burglars that your home is unnoccupied, I would be more than pissed if my home got broken into due to this litter making it obvious that i’m not home. (since i stop the mail and the paper i subscribe to)
The way I got The Record delieveries stopped was to file a complaint (unsolicited advertising creating an unsafe sitiuation – I tried “littering” complaint, but that gets tossed because this is newsworthy material which is protected under the 1st amendment).
I stated that we often are not home due to vacation or overnight family visits. The newspaper sitting in the driveway lets people know that no one is home. I than got copies of break-in articles from Ridgewood News & Record, showing that A) newspapers in driveways were found at these locations, and B) police comments that newspaper deliveries should be stopped if you’ll be away.
Since I can’t stop delevery of a newspaper that I haven’t subscribed to, the publisher has created an unsafe situation. No deliveries since then – 5 years ago.
Had the same problem but one call to the record and it stopped.
How is it, the paid Advertising Flyers of weekly store specials are called UNsolicitated advertising, when actually is Paid Solicitated advertising? when just tossed on your properties? and not delivered the proper way – your mail box like All other Paid advertisers Do, by bulk mail.
These are Ad Inserts for The Record Saturday papers. They Used to be inserted WITH the free Satrday news paper, blitz you to get u to subscribe to paper, tossed on yr property, but now, ONLY the advertising weekly specials are thrown from a passing white van onto your properties, and sometimes loose papers fly around.
I will try the email circulation@northjersey.com to be on non-subscribe list again and Also call them. Did have it stopped a few yrs back, but then they restart this tactic.
Have called the delivery people directly 800-376-6222 to have them stop.
I can’t understand why my emails and letters get ignored. I mean it’s a simple request – please stop delivery. Yet, I litterally (pun intended) have alerted the media. I now get MORE junk papers instead of less!
