Ho- Ho- Kus NJ, Frank James Caradonna, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated educator, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2026, in Naples, Florida. Known for his remarkable athletic talents, his passion for teaching, and his deep devotion to his family, Frank leaves behind a legacy that touched communities from Bergen County, New Jersey, to North Carolina and Florida.
Early Life and Academic Achievements
Born on September 16, 1938, in Paterson, NJ, to Frank and Josephine Caradonna, Frank grew up in Waldwick, NJ, graduating from St. Luke’s High School in 1956. He went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, graduating in 1961. Frank excelled in both baseball and basketball, earning an induction into the UNC Pembroke Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
From Professional Baseball to 25 Years in Education
Following his college graduation, Frank’s athletic prowess led him to professional sports when he signed a contract with the Washington Senators organization, playing three seasons of professional baseball.
After his time on the field, Frank transitioned into education and mentorship, serving for 25 years as a Physical Education teacher at Wandell Elementary School in Saddle River, NJ. Beyond the classroom, he served as a highly respected New Jersey State certified sports official in football, basketball, baseball, and soccer.
Family Life and Retirement
On June 3, 1961, Frank married the love of his life, Elizabeth Tumulty, in Ridgewood, NJ. Together, they built a life spanning over 65 years of marriage, spending 46 years in Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, before retiring to Naples, FL. In retirement, Frank enjoyed playing golf and spending quality time with his family.
Frank is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth; children Timothy Caradonna, Catherine Polcaro (Jim), and Mary Elizabeth Smith (Kevin); and grandchildren Andrew Smith (Andrew Phillips), Daniel Smith, Taylor Caradonna, and Jimmy Polcaro. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Caradonna, and sister, Esther Nicola.
