Wyckoff NJ, The Wyckoff Fire Department mourns the loss of lifelong member Louis “Louie the Shoe” Rizzo, who passed away on November 3 at the age of 96. Known for his warm spirit, dedication to his community, and decades-long service, Louie left an indelible mark on Wyckoff and beyond.
A Life of Service and Resilience
Born in East Harlem in 1928, Lou Rizzo’s journey was one of perseverance and heart. After serving in the Army—where he became a boxing champion in Germany—he married his wife, Dolores, and settled in Wyckoff in 1956 to raise their four children. Just a year later, he joined the Wyckoff Fire Department, beginning a lifetime of service that would span over six decades.
Beyond firefighting, Lou was well-known in the community as a skilled cobbler, running a shoe repair shop in Wyckoff for many years. His craftsmanship and welcoming demeanor earned him the affectionate nickname, “Louie the Shoe.”
A Community Legend Honored
In his later years, Lou was celebrated by the Wyckoff Township Committee for his unwavering commitment to the fire department and the town he loved. Fellow firefighters and community members have shared heartfelt tributes, remembering Lou for his selflessness and the positive impact he had on countless lives.
“His presence has touched many lives, and his spirit will remain in our hearts forever. Rest easy, brother,” the Wyckoff Fire Department wrote in a poignant farewell.
A Life Well-Lived
Lou approached life with wisdom and courage, strengthened by deep conversations with close friends like Bill and Maureen, who supported him during his final days. After battling leukemia, he passed peacefully at Villa Marie Claire Hospice in Saddle River, surrounded by care and compassion.
A Legacy That Lives On
Lou Rizzo’s story is a testament to the power of community and dedication. His family, friends, and fellow firefighters carry forward his legacy, inspired by his enduring kindness and service.
