Paramus NJ, the renowned Alexander’s mural, which had been removed from Paramus 25 years ago, is now finding a new home at The Valley Hospital’s new campus. The mural’s panels were unpacked on a Tuesday morning, with installation in the hospital’s garden scheduled to commence the following day, as confirmed by Erin Blake, Valley’s manager for external communications. The installation process, involving over two dozen panels, will extend throughout the month and is expected to be completed on or before October 27. This homecoming of the iconic mural signifies its return to the local landscape, evoking nostalgia and celebrating its historical significance.
The iconic mural in Paramus, New Jersey, created by Polish-born artist Stefan Knapp in 1962, was a significant work of art composed of 280 panels. It served as a vibrant burst of color in the commercial center of Bergen County, adorning the exterior of the Alexander’s department store near the intersection of Routes 4 and 17. While the mural was a defining feature of the area for many years, the former location of Alexander’s is now occupied by an IKEA store. This mural was celebrated for its artistic and historical value, reflecting the legacy of the artist and the commercial history of the region.

Love it…
Yes, I crew up with it.
About a tenth the number of panels. Nice but nowhere near the impact of the original
They are putting up all two dozen panels.
There were 280 total. Read.
A blast from the past who grew up with it shopping at Alexander’s!
There was an article about the artist in the Wreckord several years ago.
European guy as I recall.
Sshhh, don’t say that. It might not be allowed if people knew.
Valley is making so many incredible investments in Paramus. The village is out on so much.
Yeah, but Paramus is now beginning to look like a city.
beginning?
Put the rest of the panel somewhere else.
Yeah just not in ridgewood
Valley Hospital outgrew its patch of Ridgewood ground. Why wrong one’s hands about Valley doing the right thing and moving? This resident will never forget the unstinting, almost robitic, or Terminator-like arrogance and abusiveness of Valley’s attorney during the many, many months prior to Valley’s management finally realizing the futility of trying to fit a monstrous square peg into a moderately-sized round hole.
The mural should be left whole. The building is tremendous why cant they find a place for the whole thing. Seems kind of a shame to break it up.
