NJ is very hard on its seniors. Those of us still here are either too poor to leave, don’t have any place else to go & in my case, a widow that only has a daughter & granddaughter that lives here, don’t want to be alone, & can’t afford to leave. I’m considered low income but can’t afford good medical insurance but income is $120.00 too much to get on a Medicaid program! I’m on food stamps, get gas & electric assistance. There is no commonwealth marriage here so, in my case was married for 8 years 2 months, divorced, remained best friends & 2 years later I moved back in with him but didn’t marry. We lived together as husband & wife for 15 years. He died 2 years ago & im not entitled to anything except our house that had both names on the title. I had to sell the house & now live in a senior Mobil home park.
Yes time to move out of this state.Wouldn’t you
One you left out NJ charges an “exit tax” it’s basically a fine. If you sell your NJ residence and move out of state NJ taxes you.
All of the states listed in the top 10 undesirable states are all Democrat controlled. All of the desirable states are Republican controlled. Maybe moving is not the answer as much as voting is.
It’s hard to breathe here even for the younger people, don’t move to NJ!!! Horrible, taxes are going up, like there is no dam on the river and we are now the sanctuary state, so we have to pay for all the immigrants, that come here and demand stuff for free, WHICH IS NOT FOR FREE!
The only reason my husband and I stayed was because we didn’t want to leave our young grandchildren. We had always planned to move to South Carolina when we retired, then my adorable grandchildren were born. ?
Yes there is an exit tax. The loop hole is sell your house and rent for a few years and then move. That is the law.
WHY CAN’T WE FIX NEW JERSEY? Make wealthier communities pay a little bit more. Make able-bodied men get off welfare and get jobs. Stop the illegals from coming in. Bring manufacturing back to NJ. Why are property taxes so damned high in this state? Highest paid cops and schoolteachers in the country. Highest auto insurance rates… Why can’t we fix any of this? STOP building strip malls, and build more affordable housing. It’s a shame no one can come up with any solutions.
thats what got nj into such a mess , socialism dose not work no matter who tries it
Staying because my children live close. They will be buying homes soon. They were born in Valley and went to 12 years of RPS. I encourage them to look at towns nearby, and even in other counties.
I will consider moving closer to them in the future. My ties to Ridgewood are thinning.
There is no “exit tax” it is merely prepayment of taxes you would owe even if you stayed in NJ. It is not an additional tax for those leaving the state.

The cost of everything is so high in New Jersey is because of greedy New Jersey Pension Fund Manager Hogg’s ? who are paid more in fees, commissions and hidden charges than any other state pension system pension managers. They are causing New Jersey to go bankrupt due to their outrageous fees.
The police and fire budgets are way up bound millions and millions, way too much overtime. The police and fire should be paying more money into their benefits look what they make.
