Each achievement was a team effort, for certain. However, there is no way the contributions of the Ridgewood High School doubles squads in the state tennis tournament can be overlooked.

The Maroons gained perhaps their biggest victory in nearly a decade with a 3-2 victory at top-seeded Livingston in Monday’s North 1, Group 4 final. Somehow, the previously immovable object was pushed aside with a mighty effort.

“We’ve lost to Livingston the last four years [in state play], or maybe even longer than that,” RHS head coach Medha Kirtane said on Tuesday.

In fact, the streak had reached five straight years – including four meetings in the sectional final and one in the semifinals – before Ridgewood vanquished the five-time defending champion Lancers for its first North 1, Group 4 title since 2005.
