Ridgewood NJ, according to the Ridgewood Arts Foundation, have you ever found yourself walking along Ridgewood Avenue, when you suddenly hear the characteristic sounds of a saxophone wafting through the air? An instrument that is as good when mixed into an ensemble as when played solo, the music you hear along Ridgewood Avenue comes from the tenor sax being played by the talented Ken Farrell.
A saxophone player for over 46 years, Ken performed at both the Blue Note Jazz Club and Village Gate in NYC before becoming part of the Kilwins Concert Series when it began 10 years ago. The brainchild of Mary and Phil Davis, owners of Kilwins Ridgewood, this weekend concert series provides opportunities for musicians to share their talent with visitors to downtown Ridgewood. For Ken, it’s the opportunity to meet different people that gives him the incentive to perform week after week. He even recalled a moment when a listener began to weep at the plaintive sounds of his saxophone, as his music transformed that stretch of Ridgewood Avenue to a space of melancholy and longing.
Though his preferred style of music is jazz, Ken also plays plenty of older pop tunes, as well as the holiday music that will fill the downtown air in the coming days and weeks. Like an athlete called on to perform in a challenging environment, Ken prepares his body with a fitness regimen of running and lifting on alternating days to ensure that his breath can power the sweet, harmonious sounds of his saxophone.
