Ridgewood Council Candidate Paul Vagianos Should Disclose his Business was PAID for Providing Feed the Front line Meals

the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, for those that aren’t aware, however noble Feed the Front line participants are paid . That would include non other than Ridgewood Council Candidate Paul Vagianos.

Feed The Front line was funded by New Jersey Economic Development Authority’s (NJEDA) Sustain and Serve Grant. Specifically, a REIMBURSEMENT GRANT aimed to achieve two central goals: 1) to provide REVENUE to restaurants to offset direct losses due to COVID-19 and 2) To distribute free meals PURCHASED from local restaurants to target populations, including low-income individuals, senior citizens, health care workers, and first responders. Excellent program, WIN WIN, mutually beneficial to both parties. Nothing wrong with participating in the program. However, Paul Vagianos should disclose that his business was PAID for providing those meals.

  1. He also needs to answer the following questions:
    1. Why are only 20 restaurants participating? Why are other Ridgewood restaurants not given the opportunity?
    2. How much money are the restaurants actually getting? (All receipts are created using same sequence numbers and they are not real receipts by restaurants).
    3. Where are the meals being delivered? I.e. are they actually delivering meals every day or are these delivered on some days for photo ops? If all meals are being delivered then disclose it?

  3. If I had a dollar for every one of these restaurants who are involved who had outright said it’s a shady scene or that they wanted to help out but wish they could have done it without any involvement with Paul…
Not to mention the many “front liners” who really didn’t need the wonder bread and a slice of salami that they were dishing out.
He took the money and ran people along with his pal JJ

  4. Taxpayer, it’s taxpayer money – 3 Million Dollars of TAXPAYER money. I should not have to go there and volunteer to find out where my tax money is going. This should be DISCLOSED.

  5. Some restaurants don’t have the staff to supply food since most are picked up mid afternoon and some are only opened for dinner and some closed on Mondays.
Most meals made are under $10.00, also eliminating others.

  6. Are these under 10 or 10?
If it’s under 10, who is keeping the difference? The county is paying 10$ per meal as per the identical invoices from every restaurant. Are the restaurants reporting it at 10$ a meal in their tax returns?

  7. The invoices do not show sales tax.
Are the restaurants paying sales tax on these sales? I will be submitting an inquiry to sales tax department.

  8. Wow good catch! Looks like they have put all these restaurants in trouble. Sales tax on 3M dollars is going to be huge. Also IRS reporting on 10$ a meal is going to cost them additional income tax!

  9. There really is a great deal of maliciousness in this community. Issues with Vagianos aside, this program allowed restaurants to stay open and functioning during a period when people were not dining out. Many would not have made it. That means probably hundreds of people out of jobs. Business owners (some local) out of business. Building owners unable to collect rent, maintain buildings in the CBD, potentially pay taxes. All of this would have been catastrophic for the village.

But rather than consider that, this community can’t wait to focus on a gotcha moment (maybe) for Healthbarn or Vagianos. Really shameful.

  12. “community benefit” while avoiding sales tax and proper reporting to IRS? Which law allows that?
If I have to guess who wrote that comment – I can say “kindness queen”, who is always preaching kindness and is always breaking the lines.

  13. All small businesses including these restaurants received TONs of federal Small Business loans which were forgiven. No, hundreds of employees did not rely on these grants. This money went into Vagianos pockets and is now being spent on TV commercials.

  14. Mr Vagianos, how many buildings, where these 20 restaurants are located, are owned by you????

  16. To all the wannabe tax accountants commenting above. Restaurants are paid though a nonprofit organization. Nonprofits don’t pay sales tax.

  17. He sent out a mailer to every household today using Melanie’s debate platform topics and claims that he is against overdevelopment. What a scumbag LIAR – he is a synonym for overdevelopment. How can he even think about claiming that he is running to prevent it?

To anyone who is supporting him, how do you sleep at night knowing you are supporting a LIAR?

  18. JoeP, okay, even if they don’t pay sales tax, what about all receipts starting from the same sequence number and same stock paper? How does that work?
How about Federal Taxes? Are these restaurants reporting 10$ a meal revenue in their taxes? My friend tells me they are not getting 10$ a meal, it’s more like 6-7$ and the rest is going to PV and JJ.
