Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , Ridgewood Crew finished off the Manny Flick / Horvat series of races in style on Sunday, grabbing two 1st place finishes, four other podium finishes, and 10 top-5 finishes in total. This final event in the 1500-meter racing series on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia featured more than 550 rowers from 89 clubs across five different states in the mid-Atlantic region.
Overall, Ridgewood Crew boys sculling finished 4th out of 39 in the Horvat series across three separate meets in April. Despite weather impacting girls sculling at the 4th Manny Flick, Ridgewood Crew girls finished 5th out of 35.
“Our performance in this series has shown the potential and depth of our team as they face both strong competition and challenging water conditions. We’ll use these victories as a foundation for the exciting, yet formidable races ahead.” — said Ridgewood Crew Head Coach Boris Roque-Alvarez.
Ridgewood Crew’s senior duo of Anais and Elsa Friedich were the biggest contributors to their team’s success in pursuit of the Godwin Trophy. This week they again took first in the Varsity Girls 2x race (6:06.270), reprising their victory from two weeks ago in the 3rd Manny Flick meet.
Top performers for the Ridgewood Crew men’s team during the Horvat series included the four members of Sunday’s Varsity Boys 4x boat, freshman Tristan Riedel, sophomores Sam Scharfenberg and Will Nasr, and junior Lucas Evers (4:49.230), who took first in their flight.
Those four also accounted for three wins and one runner-up finish in the previous two weeks, racing in both single and double boats.
The first podium finish of the day for Ridgewood came early in the morning, in the Girls Junior Varsity 1x race. Sophomore Thelma Flowers (6:35.120) led the way for the team, finishing second. Junior Samantha Ponomarciuc (6:42.860) was close behind her, coming in fourth overall.
In the boys side of the JV 1x race, junior Will Carroll (5:56.590) grabbed bronze in an event featuring 18 total boats. Sophomore teammate Luciano Saladino (6:00.840) cruised past the finish line less than five seconds after Carroll, taking fourth place.
Moving up to the doubles races, the Girls JV 2x boat of junior Aoife Ali and sophomore Ryan Mincey (6:11.240) claimed second in their race. The Boys JV sophomore duo of Uhmjoo Han and Matthew Moomjy posted the best time in their race, but a 30-second race course penalty dropped them down to 11th place.
