Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Crew Team hosted its annual Rowathon fundraiser this past Saturday, featuring an exciting competition among local firefighters with police officers cheering them on. The event, held under gorgeous weather conditions, drew unprecedented community support and set a new fundraising record for the team.

“This year’s Rowathon was our most successful fundraiser ever,” said Head Coach Boris Roque-Alvarez. “The community really came out in force to support our rowers, and it was especially encouraging to see so many young people learning about the sport.”

In the highlight 1000-meter race, Ridgewood Fire Department Captain Brendan Corcoran clinched victory for the second consecutive year with an impressive time of 3:19.6, maintaining an average pace of 1:39.8. Firefighter Tyler Biagi secured second place with a time of 3:38.4, while Firefighter Chris Santucci took third at 3:40.2.

The competition remained tight throughout the event, with Lieutenant Joseph Ferraro finishing fourth at 3:40.6, just four-tenths of a second behind Santucci. Captain Jordan Zales and Firefighter TJ Benintende rounded out the field in fifth and sixth places, respectively.

The strong showing from Ridgewood’s first responders exemplifies the dedication and physical fitness maintained by the town’s emergency personnel. While the firefighters competed on the rowing machines, members of the Ridgewood Police Department were present to cheer on their fellow first responders, maintaining the friendly rivalry between the departments.

“Events like this showcase not only the athletic abilities of our first responders but also strengthen the bonds between our emergency services and the community they serve,” noted Coach Roque-Alvarez.

The Rowathon also served as a platform to promote youth involvement in rowing. Attendees of all ages had the opportunity to learn about the sport and watch demonstrations by experienced rowers.

Looking ahead, Ridgewood Crew announced openings for their upcoming Learn to Row program, available to Ridgewood Public School students in grades 6-11. This program offers young athletes the opportunity to experience rowing firsthand and potentially join the team’s competitive ranks.
