Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Ridgewood Crew claimed six first-place, five second-place, and three third-place finishes this past Sunday at the fourth regatta in the five-race Manny Flick / Horvat spring racing series. The series, organized by the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association, pits boats against one another down a 1,500-meter course on the Schuylkill River, with teams split up into separate flights or heats. Ridgewood had 17 entries at the regatta, the most of any school, and joined more than 420 boats from 80 different teams across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

“Each week of the spring season gets more challenging, and this race was no exception,” said Ridgewood Crew Head Coach Boris Roque-Alvarez. “As the Flick series progresses week to week, the faster boats get seeded into the same heats, so it gets tougher to do well. Today showed that our team is off to a strong start, but we still have work to do.”

The Ridgewood Crew girls contingent, in particular, kept up their positive momentum from the previous Manny Flick 3 regatta, despite facing stiffer competition.

Freshman Jaya Suri, who dominated her last race, again won by an impressive margin on Sunday in the Girls Varsity 1x event. She jumped out to an early lead and cruised to victory, beating the runner-up rower by more than five boat lengths (7:01.66). Ridgewood senior Maya Ashwin finished fourth in the same heat (7:27.88).

Also repeating in the winner’s column on Sunday was the Ridgewood pair of Courtney Spence and Grace Demercado. This freshman duo scalded the field in their Girls Freshman/Novice 2x heat, claiming a stunning margin of victory of more than a minute (7:31.14).

Racing against older and more experienced competition, sophomore Zurie Yela and freshman Lucia Krauza came in second in their heat of the Girls JV 2x event, less than seven seconds behind first place (7:11.56).

On the boys’ side, freshman Graham Glidden was another young, standout performer on Sunday. Competing in the very first race of the day, he ran away and hid from the field, winning the only heat of the Boys Gig/Novice 1x event by more than 50 seconds (5:59.61).

Ninth graders Lincoln Boudreau and Jun Lee reprised their second-place finish at the last Manny Flick with a runner-up showing on Sunday in their Boys Freshman/Novice 2x heat (5:57.83).

Ridgewood Crew scored two more victories on the day thanks to the boys’ lightweight rowers.

The senior duo of Luciano Saladino and James Ryan were firmly in control of their Boys Lightweight 2x race throughout, and powered their way across the finish line more than 14 seconds faster than the second-place boat (5:17.85).

Following right after that event, the team’s Lightweight 4+ boat of seniors Daniel Hept and Paul Hallowell, along with sophomores Isaac Reynolds, Alex Evers, and cox Sam Rizzo, scored a win (5:37.20).

The other Ridgewood sweeping boat racing on Sunday competed in the Boys JV 4+ event. The crew of juniors Siarhei Kotsikau, Gabe Dozortsev, and Kamran Sarmad, plus sophomore Isaac Rentoul-Gins and cox Edward Amores eked out a runner-up finish in their heat, just a second-and-a-half ahead of the third-place boat (5:43.07).

Ridgewood also finished second in the Boys Varsity 4x event, with a crew of sophomores Graham and Wesley Richardson, junior Tristan Riedel, and senior Will Nasr (5:07.42).

Sophomore George Rivkin and junior Josh Reynolds combined for a second-place finish in their Boys JV 2x heat (5:49.27).

In the varsity counterpart of that event, the Boys Varsity 2x race, seniors Michael Shkop and Matt Moomjy came in third (5:35.19).

The team scored another victory and a pair of third-place finishes in the boys singles races. Senior Uhmjoo Han won his heat in the Boys Varsity 1x race (6:10.48). Sophomore Luca Fisher grabbed third in his Boys JV 1x race (6:44.84), while senior Andrii Onizhuk finished in the same position after a photo finish in his Boys Varsity 1x event (6:01.00). Onizhuk crossed the line just .07 seconds behind the second-place boat in that race.
