Ridgewood NJ, Mathias Taebin Nguyen-Van-Duong, a senior at Ridgewood High School, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout—the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts of America. He is the son of Seulhee Ku and Eric Nguyen-Van-Duong of Ridgewood. Troop 7 will formally recognize his accomplishment at a ceremony on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at 2:30 PM at West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood.

Mathias earned the Eagle rank in January 2025. Nationally, only about 8% of all Scouts achieve this rank, which requires a significant demonstration of leadership, service, and commitment.

A key component of the Eagle rank is the Eagle Scout Service Project. The Scout must identify, plan, execute, and document the project along with writing and presenting a final report. This project requires the Scout to demonstrate leadership by recruiting and managing volunteers to support completion of the project. Mathias contributed lasting and meaningful improvements to the community with his project. In addition, his project provided the Scouts an opportunity to gain experience typically not offered by other extra-curricular activities.

Eagle Scout Service Project: New Day Program Outdoor Gathering Space

While volunteering at the New Day Program, an adult day care center in Norwood, Mathias built meaningful relationships with the participants—adults on the autism spectrum who rely on the center for life skills training and community support. Wanting to give back in a lasting way, Mathias chose New Day as the focus of his Eagle Scout Service Project. He led the construction of two picnic tables, creating a comfortable outdoor space where participants can relax, enjoy nature, and spend time together. The once-empty grassy area is now a welcoming gathering spot—reflecting Mathias’ care for the community and the impact of service rooted in connection. Mathias extends his heartfelt thanks to his project sponsors, mentors, volunteers and family who made his project possible through their support throughout his Scouting journey.
