Ridgewood Fire Department to replace ‘barely functioning’ boiler
DECEMBER 22, 2014 LAST UPDATED: MONDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2014, 3:48 PM
THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
Firefighters are used to handling extreme heat, but extreme cold? Hopefully not.
A boiler in the main firehouse, located at 201 E. Glen Ave., is in danger of “imminent failure” if not replaced soon.
“The boiler is barely functioning right now,” Village Engineer Christopher Rutishauser said last week. “If it fails during a cold period, we might not have heat for a number of weeks.”
The Village Council voted last Wednesday to accept a bid from Allied Boiler and Welding LLC for $23,000 to immediately replace the boiler.
Fire Chief Jim Van Goor said an employee from the village’s signal division noticed the boiler was leaking and rusting on one side.
The department will likely have to set up temporary portable heaters in the two to three days it will take to replace the boiler, the chief said.
For that, the council approved spending up to $17,500 for temporary heat for when the boiler is replaced or if it fails before it is replaced.

Even Boilers got to go sometimes — at least you can find a replacement. — Merry XMAS —
Maybe Santa will give us one for Christmas.
That would be a refreshing change —
why is it in ridgewood that all the town buildings are in need of repair . why did we let it all go to the dump.
23 k to replace the boiler and 17.5 for temp heat ?????? Wtf is wrong with this picture?
Who’s making the money on the back end?
What relative, cronie or lackey is making out on this deal??????
Because there’s no ‘extra’ money after paying the workers the generous pay, benefits, and retirements.
#4 You didn’t mention the $65,000.00 to Downs Tree Service to pick up leaves on the West Side.I guess there was extra money for that.
I’d expect the manager and council ‘did the math’ and figured that for $65,000, it would be cost effective to hire a contractor and evaluate the results…
OR spend $65,000 on a single employee *with benefits, sick time, pension* & truck/sweeper/equipment repairs….
We probably got a lot more done for $65k with a private contractor with multiple employees and trucks, front end loaders etc..
And the best part about using a contractor is that if you don’t like the results, you don’t renew the contract.
To terminate an employee with union representation, its nearly impossible and would cost more than $65k in legal fees.
Merry Christmas
Take a ride to the signal bldg in Glen Rock the bricks are falling off the bldg. and has been like that for years.someone should be held accountable.

James, the phone number listed in #8’s comments is Domino’s Pizza in Ramsey. I don’t think that is very fair to Domino’s Pizza, and I think the number should be edited out.
In general, the listing of a phone number by an anonymous blogger (or even a named but not verified blogger), is very suspect.
Why would anyone call that #? Its Domino’s pizza in ramsey lol.
I like our local Pizza here.
I’ve been here since 1969 so I don’t need a lesson on WHY MY TAXES go UP UP UP from someone who is obviously a well compensated Village employee!
If your complaint is that downs didn’t follow with a sweeper, then call the town hall and tell them to put it in the contract.
Btw, this is the FIRST YEAR I can recall that a sweeper came through with the Village leaf crew.
In years past they Usually they made a mess, pushing leaves up on lawns and left piles all over.
No one could see this coming last Spring so the boiler could be replaced over the Summer when they could have negotiated a better price for the job and $17k for temporary heat would unnecessary. ..
The DPW truck’s first pass down Ridgewood Ave., they had a sweeper. The second pass they did not along the eastern end. It was very messy when they were done.
I would like to see the Village write out summonses to those of my neighbors who cannot/will not comply with “the rules”. Particularly those who stick branches, trees and other debris in their leaf piles such that those piles cannot be picked up by a vacuum truck. Get off your arses and take that stuff to the recycling center. I’m an old lady and I take ALL of my yard waste over by myself. The men working there this year are terrific.
ok so what is the problem replace it, they have the funds.
ok so that have the funds what’s the problem?
Wtf ! Are you that stupid….this whole process if fucked up because of lax supervision of facilities and that’s OK BECA– USE THEY HAVE MY MONEY? HELLO MCFLY…. Wake the f&$@ up!
