Ridgewood NJ, Ridgewood Football Names Torre Watson as New Head Coach . The 50-year old Ridgewood graduate, whose family has been part of the community for generations, was named the Maroons’ new head football coach Monday night at the Ridgewood Board of Education meeting. Watson graduated from Ridgewood in 1991 and went to Westchester University, where he played football. His grandmother graduated from Ridgewood in 1932, his mother in 1966. His uncle played for the Maroons, he coached his nephew in the early 2010s.
Watson takes over for Chuck Johnson, who announced his resignation after 38 years at Ridgewood in February. Johnson was the longest-tenured coach in Bergen County and won six sectional titles during his career. Watson served as an assistant coach at Ridgewood under Johnson off and on since 1996, working with the offensive and defensive lines. He also spent some time on staff at Ramapo and Fair Lawn.

congrats and best of luck.
nice to see an alum given an opportunity to give back to the school he graduated
He was a horrible coach. Just a nasty dude. Would also ask us (15 yrs old at the time) what girls we were “involved with.” He would used that euphemism though. Horrible.
varsity head coach changes for football and girls lax.
any other programs need an upgrade/change?
Torre really does not know a thing about wrestling and should be removed.
Softball
No doubt. Just an awful program
Cris Kaufman must be pissed.
He’s too busy with DUI court.
Best wish to coach Watson!
No head coaching experience; sporadic assistant coaching experience.
Thin credentials but I guess he’s got the requirements that count.
No head coaching experience? He’s been the head wrestling coach for the past 17 seasons. Sporadic assistant coaching experience? He’s been an assistant coach at Ridgewood and Ramapo (two of the best programs in North Jersey) for 24 seasons! Great coach and great hire to continue the amazing tradition of Ridgewood Football.
Phys Ed instructor ?
I’m seeing some negativity around Coach Watson’s appointment, but I’m having a tough time believing it. Someone earlier posted that he asked the players what girls they were “involved with.” Call me desensitized, but that doesn’t seem bad at all. I played for Ridgewood in the late 90’s and went on to play in college. Players like it when coaches take an interest in them off the field. Torre was always human and approachable. I remember we always felt like we could talk to him about anything that was our minds. Coaches say “talk to me about anything” all the time, but don’t always really do it. He knows the game and he cares about kids, period. Congratulations and good luck this season.
