As the Graydon Pool summer season came to a close, officials reported that dire safety situations were avoided. However, as typically happens each year, there were still some searches for children, all of whom were eventually found safe and sound.
A well-trained staff is prepared to deal with Graydon’s unique physical features, pool officials said. But many lost-children situations can be avoided if patrons understand the importance of both communication and the pool rules, which are posted online and in the badge office, they said.
There were a few missing child searches in the pool this summer, but no children were “missing at a point where they were struggling in the water” and they were all found immediately, said Dan Burzinski, assistant manager and aquatics director at Graydon. As an example, he noted that one boy was swimming in an area where he told his parents he wouldn’t be.
“Usually it’s a communication thing, I find,” said Parks and Recreation Department Director Tim Cronin. “Parents should speak to their children. You have to communicate to that child. Don’t just say, ‘Go have fun, go swim.'”
There are many ways you can read a self evaluation of “the safest year” …the way you think it was with one eye closed, and hope nobody sees the whole picture.
The Recreation dept. decision makers and advisors are under close scrutiny now. Too many mistakes have been made and I expect some dramatic changes to be made.
This is a one eye closed self evaluation report and I expect to see some dramatic changes at the Village Recreation Leadership dept.
What are you talking about?
