Ridgewood NJ,  an appellate judge has sided with residents who sought to move the election dates for the Village Council and Board of Education to November.

Judge Richard Geiger on Tuesday affirmed a September ruling by Superior Court Judge Estela De La Cruz that Village Clerk Heather Mailander had acted “improperly and unlawfully” in attempting to block a petition by the group One Village One Vote to place the question of fall elections for both bodies on the November ballot.

Ridgewood voters supported the changes 7,582 to 5315. School board elections were previously held in April, and council elections in May, losing the ability to vote of school budgets .

The current school budget in Ridgewood represents roughly 2/3 of property taxes and $112 million dollars .

At Mondays Ridgewood BOE meeting the 2021-2022 Preliminary Budget was presented, beginning with a review of the district’s mission and vision. Dr. Gorman gave a brief overview of the district, noting our low per-pupil expenditure of $16,930 and the many accomplishments of our students. The preliminary budget allows us to upgrade our curriculum to align with the updated New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) that must be implemented by September 2021. Another area of focus is professional development to support the goals of the RPS Strategic Plan. The preliminary budget provides the necessary staff and resources to support the academic program, addresses the responsible maintenance of our buildings and grounds, and stays within the guidelines of the New Jersey Statutory State caps. Mr. Bisig reviewed proposed appropriations, anticipated revenue, the tax impact, and capital projects.

  1. Brogan on RHS calls stresses the importance of the public reading thru the budget and attending the BOE budget mtg yet its not important enough for a public vote.

Nice work to those knuckleheads who gave up your right to vote.

  3. Our feckless council and clerk got their asses handed to them in court. The will of the people prevailed despite Blueline Susie pissing away our tax dollars on an appeal.

Or is that being swept under the carpet in Village hall.

  5. I still cant get over why someone would be dumb enough to give up the right to vote in the school budget ?

  8. The vast majority of voters don’t take the time to understand the school budget. They scream about the budget and demand better rankings at the same time.
The BOE is elected to be our representatives to the process- elect BOE members who represent your views.

  13. People are just too stupid to vote on a school budget or anything else

  14. The referendum was carefully worded to exclude the loss of ability to vote on the budget. Moving the election date was just going to save time and money. Referendums usually do pass, especially when they don’t spell out the full story. The people in town who are pushing for all the wrong things were behind this and got a lot of people to back it–without knowing what they were really voting for.
