Though Ridgewood declined to purchase a Mobi-Chair for use at Graydon Pool this season, officials have not ruled out the possibility that the floatable wheelchair might be a future accessibility tool at the municipal park.

Ridgewood’s Parks and Recreation Department opted not to buy the chair following a free, month-long trial offered by Cedar Grove distributor Deschamps Mat Systems. The village returned the chair to Deschamps last week.

According to Tim Cronin, director of the parks and recreation department, the device was incompatible with the pool because of the current condition of Graydon’s landscape, which is marked with uneven dimensions and various nooks and crannies. But he and the Graydon staff believe a Mobi-Chair has its place.

“We don’t feel that it fits Graydon. It does not fit on [existing] ramps,” he said, referring to the pool’s current non-ADA compliant ramps.
