RIDGEWOOD — Week after week for years, Roger Wiegand would stand at the lectern in Village Hall with arms folded to address the council. But the voice at the podium made his final comments to Ridgewood’s governing body last fall, after which he soon took ill. Wiegand, a lifelong resident, died in April. And since his death, the council has been considering ways to honor him.

Now, along with members of Wiegand’s family, village officials will gather tonight in the council chambers for a brief reception honoring his memory.

The Village Council also plans to name a portion of South Irving Street “Wiegand Way.”

During the event at 5:30, the speaker’s lectern — Wiegand’s platform — will be affixed with a plaque honoring the outspoken resident.

  1. Didn’t know Roger so I can’t comment on his character but since when does a gadfly deserve to be honored? Did he ever hold elected office or a position of authority and responsibility?

    1. well it all started when Roger figured out how PSE&G was ripping off the town not replacing street lights

So we should honor only those who’ve held an elected or appointed office? No veterans, philanthropists, volunteers?

Clearly you’re delusional. See a psychiatrist pronto.

  3. #1 must be a friend of Gwenn Hauck.

  4. #1 evidently the elected officials do not agree with you, and he was often at odds with them. So even those he opposed recognized Roger’s value as an outspoken, thoughtful, intelligent citizen. He certainly deserves to be honored. Why don’t you go to the meeting tonight. Maybe you will learn why people thought so highly of this man.

  5. Attention #1, gadflys are helpful when they are as respectful as Roger was always so.
There are many others of course, but, most have long time experience of our Village history and Roger has seen them all.

Those that are respectful and speak on topics of Village concern politely are always listened to and start helpful conversations on those topics.

Perhaps, you are one or hope to be might be the time for you to start.
    Think about it.

  6. Well #6 Perhaps the Village Council should follow your advice rather then attack people who come to meeting to disagree with them. The Council cut you a lot of leeway when speak because you are old and they feel sorry for you.
