RIDGEWOOD – The village’s aging, gas-guzzling unmarked police cars need to be replaced, according to Police Chief John Ward.
The chief told the Village Council last week that the detectives’ cars are repair-prone models that are well over a decade old.
The department wants to replace two detectives’ cars with midsize sedans. The chief’s car would also be replaced.

Save gas money. Lets get the ‘2 post’ officer back walking the beat.
Yup. Beat cops would be more effective in spotting bad driving during rush hour: failing to yield, texting, etc.
Perhaps they could shut off their engines for the extended idling times. If they are concerned about non-starting for emergencies a regular maintenance schedule should take care of that. Has a Ridgewood PD car ever not started? Idling wastes a lot of gas & it pollutes the environment. Whatever happened to the bicycle force?
start walking like in the past.
Having a cop walking the beat interacting with residents is good public relations, and part of any ‘community policing’ program. The only officers I knew were those that grew up here and attended RHS with me, but they have all retired. If the officers were more interested in being ‘part of the community’ that would be a good thing. Residents would be more inclined to ‘confide’ in them which would help them do their job.
Walking the beat, stopping the idling cars, ending the PSEG details reduce $$$ guzzlers.
