Ridgewood NJ, the Ridgewood Village Council is taking the next steps to renovate Hawes Field at South Pleasant . During their September 30 meeting, the council awarded a $97,645 contract to SportCare, a Bridgewater-based company, to upgrade the soccer field, which has become a priority project for the village.

Hawes Field is heavily utilized by the Board of Education, as well as local sports organizations. Hawes Elementary students use the field for recess and physical education, while the Ridgewood Baseball & Softball Association (RBSA), Ridgewood Soccer Association (RSA), and Maroon Soccer Club (MSC) host practices and games there. Years of excessive use and harsh weather conditions have left the field in poor shape, raising safety concerns.

Councilmember Siobhan Winograd, representing the Fields Committee, highlighted that the field has been the subject of numerous complaints due to these safety issues. The upgrades are critical to ensuring the field is safe for all who use it.

In addition to the soccer field renovation, the RBSA donated $12,500 earlier this year to improve the baseball diamond at Hawes Field. According to Village Manager Keith Kazmark, the baseball renovations will begin in spring 2025, while work on the soccer field will be completed this fall.

Funding for the soccer field upgrades comes from a village account holding proceeds from sports programming, including camps and clinics. Kazmark clarified that these funds will not impact the village’s operating or capital budget, ensuring that the project is self-sustained through recreation department fees.

  1. More funny math from kk.
    Are the maroons paying anything?

  2. The RBSA paid $25k to renovate the upper Hawes baseball diamond years ago. Why only $12.5k for lower Hawes? How much is Maroons contributing for the soccer field?

    1. If memory serves, the spent money to fix Lower Hawes baseball field maybe 4-5 years ago.

  3. Is this upper, lower, or both fields?

  4. $97 to upgrade the soccer field…? What does that mean ?

Are they trimming branches that hang over both goals…?

The field is 90% grass…so you cut the grass, make sure all of the sprinkler heads work, etc.

Then aerate when the season is over.

    What am I missing…?

    Who owns SportsCare …?

  5. MAROONS SHOULD PAY THE BULK OF THIS

  6. Spend some more money that we don’t have. Not good.

  7. I am guessing that Ms. Winograd thinks she looks cool in the hat? Fun fact, um no.

  8. They are spending way more on a pavilion at Habernickel yet the fields are uneven and a mess $370,000.00!!!!

The pavilion will serve as another spot for Healthbarn to host its 60 plus campers all day during the sunny Summer months. That’s about it. Many fields could be repaired for that chunk of cash

    1. Yes the campers will be glowing in the dark

  9. She is too close to the soccer interests (husband) and should have recused on any such matters.

  10. Makes you wonder who’s running this town.

  11. Why are these projects outsourced? How many people are staffed in Nancy Bigo’s department? Whats the annual budget to run Parks and Recs? What do those people do in their day jobs? Is everyone just a desk worker?

    1. Parks and rec cut the grass at Habernickel 2 times a week and the guy sits and runs the tractor and looks at his phone. Utter waste of $$$$. Parks nd recuse the worst run department in town

  12. She has no self-awareness.

  13. Upper Hawes is the School, Lower Hawes is the Town…

  14. 100,000 and in 1 season you won’t be able to tell anything was done. It is crazy how so many people think turf fields cost more when they are by far cheaper and better.

    1. Actually they are not. Do the math.
