Ridgewood NJ, in a significant step towards strengthening the security of our schools, Mayor Vagianos proudly swore in Ridgewood’s first Class III Special Law Enforcement Officers (SLEO IIIs). These newly appointed officers bring with them years of experience in law enforcement and will be dedicated to ensuring that our public schools remain safe and secure learning environments.
We are excited to welcome the following officers to Ridgewood:
- Travis Canning (Retired from Mahwah Police Department)
- Christen Hughes (Retired from New Jersey State Police)
- Anthony Losito (Retired from Passaic County Sheriff’s Office)
These officers, having recently retired from active duty, will bring their expertise and commitment to maintaining a safe atmosphere for students, faculty, and staff in Ridgewood’s public schools.
What is a Class III Special Law Enforcement Officer (SLEO III)?
Class III Special Law Enforcement Officers (SLEO IIIs) are a special category of law enforcement officers in New Jersey. These officers are typically retired law enforcement personnel who have been re-hired by municipalities to serve in a part-time capacity, specifically to work within schools. SLEO IIIs are tasked with providing security in K-12 public schools and county colleges, focusing solely on school safety.
To qualify as a SLEO III, officers must meet several requirements, including:
- Retirement from a full-time law enforcement position within New Jersey, in good standing.
- No more than three years since their retirement.
- Completion of additional training programs tailored to school security.
- Authorization to carry firearms and perform duties similar to regular law enforcement officers, but within the school environment.
The introduction of SLEO IIIs in Ridgewood highlights our community’s commitment to providing a secure and safe space for students to learn, free from fear or threat. We look forward to the positive impact these officers will have on our schools!
