Ridgewood NJ, Commuters heading northbound on Route 17 through Ridgewood experienced unexpected delays on Monday morning, September 14, 2026, following reports of a hazardous tree leaning over the highway.

The potential hazard was discovered just north of the West Saddle River Road exit, prompting an immediate multi-agency response to secure the roadway and prevent any potential accidents.

Emergency Response and Lane Closures

To ensure safety for passing motorists, officers from the Ridgewood Police Department Patrol Division alongside crews from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) responded to the scene and temporarily closed:

  • The right travel lane on Route 17 North

  • The adjacent shoulder

Arborists from the Village of Ridgewood Division of Shade Tree arrived shortly after to evaluate the tree’s stability and safely mitigate the hazard.
